its been a couple of years since ive been across the border ... i used to go alot and id never get checked. do they check everybody that comes back to canada now tho?
RobSt*r
no, especially on a weekend when the lines are long and long and long. If you show them receipts and bags of stuff, they assume you are honest, and if your within a certain amount of money on your purchases, they usually just let you go. You are more likely to get checked if you claim nothing.

If you don't declare it and get caught they get to access penalties which are 1.5 to 2 times the cost of tax+duty or they can seize it!

Should you get searched still, your gear is in the trunk with no boxes or anything, and you say your a DJ/Producer, and forgot to unpack some of your gear before you left. (or some similar excuse/story)

that's exactly my point - penalties for what? if they have no proof (receipts and original packaging) they can't charge you with anything
like I said already - used gear, you can even say you Dj'ed at your friend's house party or whatever, returning home

Good idea Kristina, bring some CD's in a binder and some old headphones across with you so when you return, they are part of your story ;)

Care full of your story though, cause I think they know by your license plate how long you have been across for

And all that aggravation and scheming with the potential to get nailed for it is worth saving how much, exactly?

P.S. - Your making the other person foot the gas bill is most likely going to negate any savings they might incur, unless they're making big ticket purchases as well, which would then further the potential of your getting dinged at the border.

It's not about only saving money; rather, it's primarily about getting gear that isn't available anywhere in the GTA (or likely Canada for that matter).

But, I'm probably going to hold off on traveling to the States and hope that my pre-order arrives sooner than later.

However, I am planning on ordering a sound card online from a U.S. based company. The final price of the interface with tax will be around $365 CDN (approx $330 USD). The customer service rep estimated that I'll have to pay around $40 CDN at the border. Does this sound about right?

NOPE!

They think you are working and then they want to see your work visa or temporary work permit.

Many years back I had a crate of vinyl in my trunk from the night before, was going over to Detroit for some shopping, dunno why I got pulled over on my way there, but they saw the vinyl and asked what it was for, I told them I DJ. Then they said they wouldn't let me bring it across because they think I was going to DJ and make money and didn't have proper papers. I had two choices, leave the records there and pick them up on the way back, or turn around. I chose turn around, no way I was leaving the precious wax with the feds! Used to happen when I booked bands from the states too, they would come over and say they were practicing or playing a charity gig, they would get turned around all the time.

And we go over tons of time to the states being so close to Detroit, the best bet is find an Canadian who works there or makes frequent trips and have them bring it back over. We used to do that with gear all the time from Guitar Center and records from Record Time.

Another thing you can do is (depending on what you are bringing), we've done this with cameras, GPS units, laptops, mp3 players etc.. is to take it out the packaging, make it look like you're using it and mail yourself the reciepts and warranty paper to your home so you can still prove ownership or warranty whatever later on if need be.

I've many times just snuck the stuff over, have a good excuse and you're golden. Come back around the time of a sports game or concert getting out. Or if you're only gone a couple hours, go with a girl or your girlfriend and say you went to dinner for your anniversary etc...

Another good one now is say you were at the Casinos...

They do spot checks and if they catch you, YOU'RE ED! You're gonna get red-flagged and good luck getting across without any problems for the next few years... happened to some buddies of mine who worked in the D.

PS - You're planning on spending $900 on gear and worried about filling up the tank on a Civic. You're already in the states, you're saving money by filling up there on the way back anyways!
