Lockdown
I'm a little upset at how things went last night. First off, I drove up from South San Diego to see John Askew. I showed up at around 11:50 and there was no mention of him not playing. The flyer said that it was 15 ALL NIGHT if you have the printout/flyer OR are on the list. My girl and I were both on the list and we were both charged 20, while the guy behind the box office most likely already knew that John Askew wasn't going to play. There was absolutely no mention of him not showing up because of his ear problems.

After I figured out that he wasn't going to show up, I talked to the box office guy and he said to talk to the promoter who I then asked for a refund which was laughed off. I drove up from South San Diego in gas that's around 30-40 dollars, I also paid for parking 10 dollars, and then 40 bucks to get in (for 2 people) and drinks which were around 60 dollars (3 rounds of 2 drinks). So I spent around 150 bucks.

I have been to circus many times, I spend a lot of money there, I think it could have been handled better. I even asked for a partial refund and he laughed it off, but I was told to come back and I'll be taken care of. That's cool, but I spent a lot of money I wanted a refund for the 40 that I paid to get in there. I doubt that Askew was still getting paid, so why couldn't you have made it 10 dollars all night or at least stay with 15 like it said on the flyer. There should have been an announcement when it was found out that Askew wasn't going to show up. It was a long drive home.

Here's a video that my friend Patrick Gleason took. This was part of my set that was between 11pm-12am:

Also, if you get unlimited texts with your cell phone service, maybe leave your number at the guest list table next time. I got a couple of text messages from Circus that offered discount admission. This is great for the regulars who come frequently, no flyers to print or trees to kill, and the text message shows the admission price so hopefully then it's clear to everyone!

I found out that John wouldn't be spinning through a friend shortly after arriving at Circus. He said there was a sign on the window, but I never saw it since I came in through the guest list table.

John couldn't make it to Circus, so I wanted to bring him here...this video is from his set last week in NYC:

Also found this July 20th Facebook note from John:

"Back in England I drive home and have a BBQ with my family before hitting the road again in the early evening – this time bound for Slinky in Bournemouth. On arrival at the club I meet Fabio Stein and my old friend Dav Gomrass who is rocking the decks and setting up the crowd perfectly. The gig is brilliant. I love the sweaty intimate vibe in this place and enjoy my set enormously. It’s banging as in here.

Back in the car my ears are ringing like hell after the long weekend of aural abuse. At 5am I fall into bed – totally spent. The following day I have the house to myself and watch the men’s final at Wimbledon. Amazing on the edge of your seat stuff washed down with roughly 20 cups of horribly strong coffee.

Next up gigs at the new Escape club in Swansea Ministry of Sound in London and my US tour."

I think it's sad that so many DJ's are being affected by hearing damage these days, especially when it is, for the most part, preventable. Here's the link to the TA hearing protection thread in case anyone wants to learn more:

http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...ghlight=hearnet

Fortunately, DJ no-shows are pretty rare these days. I know that Circus didn't have any control over John not being there, but it's too bad people didn't know ahead of time. Whenever I buy tickets for a nightclub event, there's usually small print somewhere that says they do not guarantee the DJ you have paid to see will be there, and there are no refunds. That's just the way it works, I guess, but I would definitely hit up the manager next time for some comps! I definitely feel your pain on this one.

Norin & Rad did a great job filling in for John Askew...they have so much energy, live and breathe the music, and make a great connection with the crowd...I see them going places in the future! :) I couldn't believe how many TA's were there, hadn't seen some in a long time so was nice to catch up. The DJ booth works so well in its present location too, was such a good idea to move it back except for the "big house" events.

Will post up my pics soon, have been coping with the new Firefox release that basically destroyed web browsing on my Mac :whip: , so as Emma Hewitt and Cosmic Gate would say "there's not enough time..."

Haha. Good idea ;) Dancing is good for you. :)

I know what you mean about the food looking and tasting so good. This week I think I am going to get back in the gym again, cut down on sugar, and stick to lean protein and veggies.

I need to start dancing and hula hooping more myself! If the music's as good as it was this weekend every week, I'll be able to lose weight in no time, hehe. :p

He didn't get presales...just discount list it sounds like. And if there was a little sign in a window, that isn't good notice. There should be signs in multiple places that make it obvious.

In this day and age customer service at clubs is so important to keep people coming back (for the music). Of course, the staff at Circus is usually great. I dunno who is responsible for putting up signs, but if he got all the way in w/o seeing some type of obvious notice, that's just bad service. Years ago this was kinda typical...but it's been so long where I've gone to place where the DJ cancelled and there weren't signs EVERYWHERE around the outside making it clear.

This all said, that clause you say is very true. But in every case I can think of the club or promoter gave those ticket holder options when the main headliner cancelled. Most of the time they offered refunds. Or they can hold on to their tickets and they'll be valid on the make-up date for that gig (haven't seen this one done in awhile). I can't think of the last time the promoter straight-on stiffed the customer after their headliner cancelled. Seriously.

If someone is trying to rebuild Saturday nights at Circus, which I am sure we all hope becomes a big success in the long run, incidents like this should be avoided. It's very obvious jsut about every TA had no clue Askew wasn't playing until after they were inside the club. It shouldn't be like that. That's all I'm saying.

What if it was a DJ like AvB or Tiesto or Ferry where everyone paid just to go inside and see he's not even going to play and they can't get their money back. Would that not be screwed up? Everyone one on here would be pissed. Just because it's Askew in this case shouldn't make it any less of an issue.

- DaveT, who is just looking out for the common-clubber who wants good service.
