| Thrillseekers was great but the two guys before him were terrible. Every time they "mixed" the crowd would stop dancing either because they were wrecking, weren't mixing harmonically or simply because there wasn't any rhythm to their set. I don't mean to be hating but I expect better talent for $35. I miss the days when spundae organized the events. There is more to djing than just waving your hands in the air trying to amp the crowd. |

This was my first time at Circus and I have t day I was seriously impressed. I had a great (if short) time there last night!!!
Firstly the crowd was the most diverse I've seen in a club in la - all nationalities, some very casual, other dressed to impressed - but all up for it and no attitude, just there to have a great time.
The club was waaaaay larger than I thought it would be - the main floor is easily comparable to Vanguard's and the setup was well thought out, loads of bars and nice clean toilets.
The outside area is great and good to chill out and agin you can see they really made an effort with everything from the staff to the decor.
Some parts of the club were a little bit shabby but I've yet to find a club in LA that doesn't a have a little shabby somewhere - overall really good and and again you can see they're really making an effort, which isn't easy with a warehouse type space - props to the management for such a good job.
The only two downsides were:
The soundsystem (1) and Norin and Rad (2),
(1) Being a professional sound engineer, I'm more picky than the average person, but even so, I have to say it does not sound great in there at all. The system has muddy mid range, a low bass rumble in place of deep bass and the highs were OK but got harsh whenever accented by the DJ. I think Norin and Rad deserve some of the blame because I've got a feeling they were redlining a Pioneer mixer (which is never, ever a good idea) and they kept doing high sweep effects which on that system just sounds harsh and painful. Dj's should learn their environment and play accordingly.
I personally love Funktion1 systems but in there it wouldn't work becuase the space is acoustically cold - but a Turbosound system would be perfect to warm things up in that space without being sharp. Please, if there's any way you can, think about doing something to the system in there. I know it;s not as easy as that as systems aren't cheap, but borrow one for a night (free) as a potential buyer and I promise the difference will be incredible.
(2) Even though they (he) didn't mix badly (they were NOT trainwrecking) they were not as good as the hype I;ve seen on here. I say he, becuase one seemed to do all the mixing and the other just danced around him and I have to say I've never seen more jesus posing in my life. I was sure he was going to air guitar at some point. They had good energy but I was just over the top for the time of night and they didn't really build a flow or create a warmup for Steve in any sense.
Overall this was a great night, Steve played very well and I love the effort that you can see the club has made - I don't think anyone is going to this much trouble to make the experience unique.
Circus is giving the two other LA clubs some serious competition.
Trin - thanks again - we tried to find you but didn't see you :conf: |

My favorite part of the night was when the glowsticks were thrown at the crowd!!! Actually me and in2muzikk were looking at the main stage from above, close to where the VIP section is at. It was just amazing to see all the people on the dance floor pick up the glowsticks and move to the beat. THE GLOW-STICK THROWING THING WAS A GREAT IDEA!!!
...
Now....when are those CIRCUS T-Shirts getting made? I want a Medium. ;)
|
It was funny watching everyone scramble for the glowsticks. A lot of people got 2 different colors and were looking around to trade. But yeah, it was a very creative idea.
Tshirts! |

I definitely love how liberal Circus is. Come as you are, bring whatever you want, just don't cause trouble. |
