Hey guys/gals,

A hobbyist trance producer posts a youtube video filming himself playing an original trance melody on his Access Virus Polar TI.

Apparently, he was contacted by a trance producer called G.P. who was interested in the melody and completely ripped it out from under him and released it on Paul Van Dyke's label.

The youtube video...

His story posted on his blog...

Epic ..

Anyway.. That tune sounded like one of 3rd Moon's old tune..

Is it lame? yes - But if the guy who made the original melody cared that much about it (and I'm sure he didn't) he should have had it copyrighted. I personally advise anybody whoever asks me about these matters to use peermusic. (www.peermusic.com) Tried, true, and tested. I found out about it through TasteXperience who is an old Trance artist and when I dug a little deeper I found that some older trance artists used it and TasteXperience had nothing but good things to say about it which is good enough for me. I personally have not used peermusic so I can't recommend upon personal experience, however I will be using them soon to get a cover licensed that I'm working on. Gotta have all my ducks in a row on this one because it's going to...."ruffle some feathers" - Enough to possibly warrant a lawsuit if not done properly. It's an absolute classic and the label who owns it is working on new remixes for it. Not sure if they plan to release them, and I didn't find out they were doing it until after I paid and had my acapella done for it. I wouldn't have done it if I knew they were having new remixes done, but oh well, we'll see. I may just alias it completely and offer to sale the cover to them or a bigger label for a flat fee because I honestly have no idea what to expect and the last thing I want is trouble with a big, active, respected, label.

Seems it's not as clear as night and day. There's some dialogue between the two here:

From what I can make out, Filip wrote the melody and put it up on YouTube. Proud contacted him and asked if he could use if for a tune. Filip agreed with the understanding he'd be credited for his work, but is now displeased to find out that the track had been signed to Vandit Digital without his blessing.

Bit of a mess, but I hope the guys managed to work something out.

"Gary Proud - The Republic" if you fancy a search.

Eh. That melody is as generic as they come.

One producer ripping someone else's melody? I'm shocked.

Right that is almost as rare as finding a shady promoter.

Rest assured that anyone in their right mind won't take the time and money to sue someone selling a thousand mp3s. But if you are being a little and stealing material , they will probably use their influence and take it off beatport as well as any of your subsequent or prior releases.
