But what makes you think her grievances were with the volume of their discussion, rather than her just resenting them speaking a language other than English?

Good point. The only reason I would understand her frustrations would have been if the men were being loud and boisterous.

The idea of speaking a language other than that of the majority is not even the issue here, imo. I'm sure she wouldn't have flipped out if it was an Arabic couple just sitting together and speaking to eachother, or a Swedish mother speaking to her child. Then again, who knows - she uses the term "dickwank"

My parents always taught us to keep our voices down when speaking Polish in public as a courtesy to those around us
a) because they don't have the ability to understand
b) because I know for a fact that Polish sounds like annoying gibberish to the foreign ear

The reasoning for A is something along the lines of this:
If something is private and you don't want others to understand, you can say it quietly or use another language. If it's not meant for others to hear, then you don't have to bellow it - english or not.

I haven't even considered this from the point of view of someone using their mother tongue because their English isn't strong enough. That being the case - ya, this woman is a cunting hag.

But my guess is still that those guys were being loud and annoying.

On the other hand, when we have russians and polaks living here in Lithuania, especially the capital Vilnius, for decades and they still can't speak Lithuanian, and oftenly are instulted if you don't speak russian with them. Then I'm like what the .
It's just I don't want them to 'talk my language' I just want them to get back to their mother russia, there's plenty of it for everyone.

lol that sounds like English-speaking expats and whatnot over here...
some live here for 10+ years and are even married and have kids and can't speak more than a few basic words of Japanese, and will constantly bitch about stuff like "job discrimination" when they can't find a job other than English teaching or headhunting or something. Of course, they can only complain in English since their Japanese is too rudimentary, so nobody except for fellow bitchy expats listens to them anyway.

mmmmz my point on this topic is... if you started to live in another country and you are planning on staying there, then you simply learn the language. but I understand that people who are on a holiday canīt speak that language. anyways most (flemish side) belgian people, when they travel they will try to speak the language of the country they are in. french in france, german in germany, english in england and so on. or they would take a small dictionary with them (and try to speak the language).
but for example when Iīm getting a durum or a kebab in belgium, i simply hate it when the employees talk arabic or whatever when I or other people are in their restaurant. They could just be laughing with you, without you even knowing it.

it happens worldwide to be honest. You get lots of people from asian countries, chinese, pakistani, arabs etc who don't try to speak a word of the language here, like you get the english or whatever there. I think it's polite to actually try to speak some of the language of whatever place you're in and usually the locals appreciate effort if not accuracy.

However if you're planning to live in another country, you should at least make an effort to integrate or else

a) you're cheating yourself of opportunities
b) you're as bad as the people you moan about here.

I thought that was obvious in that context, but yeah, that was intentional... and shameless :thepirate

It's about time English speakers worldwide felt free to blithely split their infinitives! And the passive voice must be rescued from the dirty hands of ignorant editors as well!!

*shakes fist*
lenazi
no one cares here as people tend to be at least bilingual and not toothless chav breeders.

I think people are mixing issues here. If you permanently move to a country sure you should learn the language, but if you're having a private conversation around strangers who have no business listening to you anyway, you should feel free to speak whatever bloody language you want. And unless you were being loud or otherwise antisocial there is no explanation for someone else being pissed off at you other than xenophobia.

Do you have any pet grammar peeves? I have a load even though my grammar is far from perfect. For example you failing to use the possessive form of the pronoun preceding a gerund would annoy me.
