Like I said, it's not perfect, but it scored well on its tests. That side collision impact was done with a huge barrier, simulating an SUV. The Airbag did an excellent job of deploying and protecting the driver, and the head on collision had the car totally rebound from the barrier, with the damage not so bad.
I had an argument with Ben (gehustmasomething) not too long ago about the safety of the Smartcar and he had some better videos/links. Is it safer than a Hummer? No. Is it safer than any other vehicle that size? Probably.
