a) How the would you know?

b) It depends on what your standard of 'backward' is. I regularly download 20 wave files from beatport in one sitting, and that's capacity enough for me.
Nrg2Nfinit
imagine how much more you could download if you actually ate meat.

Yeah usage limits is where we get really screwwed in Australia, because of the infrastructure monopoly. I get 4 or 5 mbps fairly regularly.

Hopefully once they roll out this national fibre network we'll be getting higher limits.. and speeds closer to the hypothetical limit (100mbps).. who knows how long that'll take them though

Usage limits?

I get 40GB a month. Unless you are torrenting uncompressed movies (illegal anyway) or using it for your profession, such as graphic/video design, I fail to see why you would need more. I could easily make do with half of that, and as I said, I buy a lot of wave files.

Illegal but so commonplace.. I get 80GB per month if i include offpeak but I could easily blow it if I downloaded anything that struck my fancy.. besides it's the principle of the thing Telstra is charging smaller ISPs through the nose for usage for no reason. In other countries many people don't care if their neighbours leach off their wireless cos there's no chance you'll blow their limit and leave them with hefty bills or restricted speed for the rest of the month. Our internet infrastructure at the mo isn't fantastic.

:wtf:

What, like 10 uncompressed DVDs that 'took your fancy'?

Seriously, internet is like fast cars...I already have a pretty zippy one, but once you feel a little bit of speed you don't want to stop until you've got the best.

Seriously, do you not think that our internet infrastructure and bandwidth issues need some serious attention in Australia?

At the moment, if you pay for a premium service (ie. ADSL2+ or (lol) 'EXTREME' cable), then the speeds aren't too bad. They're STILL not what you would get in other countries though. The problem is that we're so far behind a lot of the world, as the new technologies become the norm, like streaming HD media or TV-on-demand through the internet, we're just going to be left behind.

The internet is so integral to so much these days, I just don't think this can be ignored, and considered 'good enough'. The way things are headed, we'll require faster speeds, and far more bandwidth than what we're getting.

And don't get me started on the internet censorship issue. Hatehatehate.

I don't deny that we are far behind other countries. We are WAAAY behind. I'm just saying that I find our current internet situation adequate. Do you really think streaming HD media is as important to spend money on as healthcare or education is?

You're right: healthcare and education are more important than the regular Joe Blogs being able to stream HD media. But Australia is quite an innovative country, as far as reseach and development etc. goes. I can't help but feel we're being held back in this regard, simply by not keeping up with the worldwide advances in internet technology.

If we keep ourselves so far behind the rest of the world, it's going to start impacting on Australian businesses. If the world is moving towards online commerce (which it obviously is), and we're simply not able to compete due to the poor infrastructure, what does that do for our economy?

This sort of change should be proactive, not reactive.

I think we can have all three..

Education in particular is not going to be solved with money alone. TBH I reckon part of the problem in the public sector is teachers not being held accountable for the results they produce (unlike any other profession).
