| quote: | Kansas just got a little more Teutonic last month. According to a report by USA Today, the state enacted a "Right Lane Law" on July 1st that makes it illegal to drive in the left lane of a multilane highway unless you are passing slower traffic.
This type of lane etiquette is a big reason why many sections of the Autobahn move so quickly and with less congestion. Kansas lawmakers figured it would not only improve the flow of traffic, but also reduce road rage incidents brought on by aggressive right-lane passing maneuvers. Let's hope it works and spreads to other states. |

The highway traffic act already addresses this issue.
The first thing we need to do is have a passenger lane on all 400 series highways to help reduce traffic problems. |

Where does it address this issue? I know it's illegal to 'pass on the right', but some of those corolas locked in at 90 in the left lane make it incredibly hard to follow that rule.
As far as I know, there is no law that spells out, in no uncertain terms, that it's illegal to drive in the left hand lane if you are not traveling faster than the traffic in the right hand lane. |

You mean an HOV lane? They have them out in BC and it doesn't do a damn thing to alleviate traffic slowdowns. You get one or two people using it and flying by everybody, but that's it. |

| We have something similar here...just not enforced...and certainly not in the mentality of drivers here. |

Well, generally people in the States follow the "Drive in the right, pass on the left" rule.
Driving on the Interstate, 2 lanes, everyone driving in the right lane until they make a pass. It just makes sense. :conf: |

Toronto highway driving etiquette states that you must:
-Always drive on the left lane and reserve the right lane for passing and/or driving 40 under the limit
-Always speed up when the guy next to you is passing you and then slow down when he gives up and goes back behind you
-Speed up automatically when you see someone's signal indicating they would like to safely merge into a lane in front of you
-Slow down almost to a complete stop whenever you see anything on the side of the road even if its not blocking a lane
Please not that these rules do not apply east of Highway 115, north of Barrie (with exception of summer cottage weekends), or west of London where normal etiquette is expected |
