North America? More like Canada and more specifically Ontario. And they forgot the root problem of it all. POLITICS. Because of politics the venues and the hours suck. Look at what they did to WEMF for example. V fest sucks because they bring in boring acts and its all day. No thanks..

In europe they are in cool venues like old castles and go all night and all day. Big difference.

Maybe in Eastern Europe, but most outdoor festivals in Western Europe end before midnight.

I think it's just festivals in Canada that suck. I think they suck because they don't know how to book acts.

Look at Coachella, Boonaroo, v-Fest US, Lollapalooza.. now those are festivals. In Canada they book 1 or 2 big acts and 15 ty ones that most people have never heard of. Of course you're not going to do the big numbers if your headliner is only good for 10-15,000. Now follow the lead on what they're doing in the states and have 4..5.. 8.. 10 headliners and guess what... people will give a , they will travel to be there, they'll camp... they'll do whatever you want them to.

Throw in a DJ stage (that's all ages) with another 6-8 headliners and guess what, you've just upped your attendance by another 5,000 people.

Evan is completely right.

Booked dem big acts. If you build it they will come...lol

But at what venues? Even V fest keeps getting complaints and shuffled around. Now try being an organic event without the lawyers and the money. Forget about it. This is why festivals arent working here. The fun police keep responding to the old fart who complains that they "scared the loons away" (actual quote from a whiner about WEMF 2005)

also look at how europe does some of their festivals, they have bungee jumping, fairs, rides, sex booths, sheesha booths, even a big festival in LA had places you could get a proper meal, potatoes, beef, etc. It's not just about meeting the band, its broadening your horizon. These promoters should be looking at how europe, central america and asia do their outdoor events. Canada also has certain laws which prohibit promoters from doing certain things, thats why europe is better for outdoor festivals!

I think this Zoo Festival happening in New York will be very interesting to see how they organized and what sort of crowds they can draw.

Take note toronto!
