Mayor pushes out lawnmowers – and pollution

environment, Mayor David Miller

Mayor David Miller today made a push to gradually rid Toronto of polluting chainsaws, leaf blowers and lawn mowers.

He announced the city will begin retiring its own environmentally polluting equipment used to cut grass and trim hedges in city parks.

At the same time he launched a program called “Cut It Out” to encourage residents to get rid of their own gas-guzzling machines this fall, offering incentives like $10 Home Depot gift certificates and chances to win prizes.

“What we hear again and again from the people of Toronto is they just want to know how and the gift card and the fact their old equipment is going to be recycled and reused responsibly and disposed of responsibly will reach Torontonians,” Mr. Miller said, after operating a manual push mower on a strip of sod outside City Hall today. “Will everybody change? Perhaps not this year. But the city is showing leadership and there are lots of alternatives.”

Old generation two stroke engines, like those in lawn mowers and leaf blowers, create that same amount of smog in a one-hour period as 40 cars or one car traveling between Toronto and Montreal.

By replacing its own equipment, the city estimates it will reduce smog-forming emissions by 49,500 tonnes and greenhouse gases by 133,600 kilograms.

Residents looking to get rid of their old machinery can bring them to the local community environment days which will be held at different dates across the city, between Sept. 12 and Oct. 24, said Fatima Dharsee, executive director of the Clean Air Foundation.

The first takers will get a gift card and a chance to win a new cordless electric mower. The old equipment will be disposed of free of charge.

The Mayor said in his neighbourhood near High Park many people are replacing lawns with flower beds and gardens that don’t require power equipment to maintain.

He said at his home he uses an electric mower.

"The hope we have is tremendous because Torontonians have already proven themselves to be environmentalists,” Mr. Miller said.

IMO Toronto does NOT i repeat.. DOES NOT have a pollution problem. We get a few "smog days" per year and even at that its not nearly as bad as most of the world's cities.

I credit advanced technology in pollution scrubbers, better auto emissions and the fact that half our manufacturing has moved to china LOL.

But seriously, maybe we should all just sit at home and stop breathing in order to save the environment.

yeah but is it too much to ask you to just deal with the facts and leave out your romanticizing about saving torontonians from the brink of death at the hands of the commie mayor?

I'm all for cutting emissions but I'd rather see initiatives to move towards solar energy and the likes.

I'm affraid I will be banned if I don't though.

Someone should just make catalytic converters for small engines... problem solved.
MarkT
so let me get this right...

he is now complaining about things that have not been banned, have not been proposed to be banned, are not the subject of any legislation whatsoever, and which don't compel anyone to do anything that they don't want to do.

in fact, the gov't is doing EXACTLY what he says in another thread(without evidence as to why) it ought to be doing, which is limiting itself to educating the public and letting people decide for themselves what they want to do.

so he gets what he wants...but still finds a reason to bitch!

Jay, why not start a blog? put the link in your sig here and then stop cluttering up TA with these silly threads.
