At various times in my life I've been into classical music, rock 'n roll, alternative, heavy metal, rap (both underground and commercial gangsta), demostyle, trance, house, techno, breaks, goa, jungle, jazz, funk, blues, and probably a few other things that I forgot about.
I think with just about any of the tracks I've produced, you can clearly hear the influence of at least one of the non-EDM genres. That doesn't necessarily mean they're great tracks, of course, but I have to agree that people who've never bothered to broaden their horizons usually end up producing, and listening to, generic uninspired crappola. |

I completely agree. My producing inspiration almost single handedly came from Dr. Dre. I was huge into hip hop and rap before it fell flat on it's face. Then I got into trance; but still Dre has inspired me as a producer more than anyone else.
I listen sporadically to pretty much everything. Rap, hip hop, R&B (good stuff not the pop ), rock, alternative, classical, jazz and every form of edm. I think as a producer you almost HAVE to listen to and gain inspiration from other genres in order to stay ahead of the curve. |

| Personally, I trace the point where trance started to go downhill from where it became a seperate entity from breaks, techno and house and confined itself to a narrow BPM of 130-145. |

| On a related note I think I'd be far more likely to respect an artist that only lists the classical top 5 then the trance top 5. |

Maybe, although that could be a sign of pretension.
I would find "Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Debussy" less interesting than "Milhaud, Ligeti, Penderecki, Saint-Saens, Berlioz." The latter shows the person has looked a little deeper than the composers everyone already knows... |

I think it's extremely elitist and pretentious to judge a persons music just because they may have only listed their influences in their preferred genre on some random social networking site, without going into their whole life story and musical development but maybe that's just me.
You know what's important? The end product. You could be influenced by a 2nd century pan flute player and be classically trained with a collection of over 1 million CDs from multiple genres but if your music is then it's still .
Far too much emphasis on this forum is placed on a lot of crap which at the end of the day doesn't even matter one bit, especially when that time could be better spent actually making music instead of talking crap all the time. I think Storyteller said something similar before and I completely agree with him. |

| I do actually listen to the music and ultimately judge based on that, you know. Often the producers will include a self-lauding "musical biography" that just lists the same influences again. |

How do musical influences "not even matter one bit" when you go to MySpace and search for trance and hear people trying to make exact replicas of Sean Tyas and Armin a thousand times over?
:wtf: |
