Time Warner? Direct TV? Dish? Fios?

I'm moving places this weekend which means I'll need to set up cable TV again. I was forced to get Time Warner here, but I can get any company at my new place.

Any recommendations from fellow TA's?

If i could get Fios i would.

Its the fastest internet connection available right now. I dont know much about their TV selection though, i only watch sports on TV.

Fios. Easily the best internet and TV.

It really depends on what channels you watch. Cable has no commitment, Dish has the best selection of international channels. FiOS / UVerse have the fastest internet speed, that is if you need that. Cable and phone companies will try to get you to sign up for all 3 services (TV, internet, phone) and offer discounts.

I've had Comcast, DTV, Dish, and TWC in the past few years, and know peeps with FIOS...As much as I hear great things about FIOS, I hear quite a few bad things too. Just hope you don't have to deal their support a lot. As bad as TWC' and Comcast's support is known to be, Verizon makes them look good from most accounts I know.
FIOS does have the least amount of compression (if any?) so it's HD quality is the best. But as more boxes get out that rely on H.264 feeds (like most of LA on TWC uses peace of crap Motorola boxes), the quality will improve.

That said, if you go with TWC, I'd just wait for the new 2-way CableCards to come out (which you can lease from your cable company for like $3/month), and get one and slap it in a TIVO series 3 box....so you just use your TIVO for everything and not a box from the cable company.

Also make sure your place is already wired for FIOS. Most places can get it, but don't have the fiber running to their house. I've read stories (like on dslreports.com's boards) of peeps having their yards torn up and concrete damaged...in addition to long waits to have the fiber run.

After that, for selection, I'd go with DirecTV. Dish's boxes suck.

I'd say TWC's HD quality is a bit better than DirectTV's, but the selection isn't as good and TWC goes down more often than I'd like

TWC's Road Runner internet is lagging behind FIOS and even Comcast (which you can't get down here). By the end of this year, Comcast will have 90% of their network on DOSCIS 3.0, which can be just as fast as Fios. 50mbps/20mbps (though in some aeras, it's 50/10). Verizon and Comcast all have comparable plans...but Comcast does have a few more options and there are no contracts! Too bad we don't have that option down here.

I dunno much about AT&T Uverse other than more support issues.

The only thing about FIOS is that it's not as guaranteed as per Cable/DSL. If it went out, I think you have a lot less leverage of VZ getting it back online fast...

TWC is the worste is all i know.

They're all terrible, I hate waiting 2 seconds for every channel to change, half the reason I dont watch much TV at the moment.

Since TWC dropped HDNET and HDNET movies, the can suck it. I'm still stuck with them until FIOS gets into my neighborhood. Luckily, SDV hasn't been employed here yet as I'm a TiVo user and those tuning adapters appear to be a PITA. I know quite a few FIOS subscribers and all of them love it. Zero problems, fast internet, a ton of the best looking HD, works great with TiVo and they even have copy protection turned off so you can transfer all your recordings to your pc with TiVo desktop. TWC protects ALL channels except for OTA.

No question about it. Get Fios.

Ive had it for almost 2 years now. Never had issues with it. The TV is excellent. Multi room DVR is a huge plus. The menus are nicely laid out and easy to use. Internet is the best ive ever had. Lightning fast. I upload my radio shows now in around 90 seconds (140mb files). Phone, well, its Verizon so you know that end is fine. Their package deals are top.

Time Warner sucks. DirecTV isn't bad but there is no comparison. Not a huge fan of Dish Network.

DirecTV if FIOS is not available..

DirecTv's receivers are awesome and filled with great features.. The on-screen navigation is also smooth and easy to browse. They also have "On-Demand" which requires internet connection to download, awesome to catch a show you missed. You are also able to watch stuff recorded on the receiver on any PC that has the direcTV software. You are also able to stream video/pictures/music from any PC to the receiver!

Anyway, I am a BIG fan of DirecTV but have heard sooo much of FIOS, that I would actually think of switching if it ever make it to the bay area..
