My 2 cents. |
bingo. i have always said this. people always mistake kindness for weakness, but really...the easy/weakling way out is being a dick/emo. |

Has anyone else noticed that recently, it seems like all the 'nice' users turning into cynical nasties? JBJ and woscar are the first examples I can think of.
|
The nastiest I ever saw cor was one afternoon 'bout 3-4 years ago, when a handful of TAs, including some of my favorite 'nice' users, all hated on Peter (igottaknow). I think there was like a huge thread packed with ugliness and viciousness. It made my monitor cry and my eyes bleed. So its not really a 'recent' phenom. |

i love nice, easy going people who are rarely mad or rude. that's exactly how my boyfriend is.
simplicity is a breath of fresh air for me. all you overly complex grouchy people do it on purpose i think...trying to give yourselves more meaning/character or something:stongue: |
I know what you mean. Sometimes there's good reason to be angry or stressed out about certain things but some people put on an act.
I guilty of being an ass at times, but honestly I get pretty stressed out sometimes and I take it out on other people, but if I'm out of line I'll always apologise and do my best to keep peace.
It's one thing to be verbally abusive but violence worse.;) |

oh i definitely have my moments too but i will always announce that i'm in a ty mood or even apologize in advance if i seem "off".
i was mainly talking about the personas created on these forums. |

My thoughts, precisely.

Because I find constant happiness to be disingenuous. |

No, but you're allowed to be grumpy, to be quiet, to not want to smile and put a nice spin on obvious bull, and to sometimes get legitimately pissed off at the idiocy or behaviour of others. I'd rather someone be honest than be fake, and nobody is happy all the time. |
|
I see what you mean. We should distinguish "constant happiness" and politeness, however. Acting like a carebear and preaching love to mankind all the time is not an easy thing to do, given how we're all bound to get disappointed at one time or another. However, you ought to be mature enough after a certain age to know who is responsible for your misery and who isn't.
I'm all for honesty, don't get me wrong. But, just because we're hidden behind usernames and whatnot (something I never cared to do because it feels wimpy, and I'm adult enough to be responsible for my words both on-line and in real life, and I bet most of you do know my real name), that doesn't mean you're free to ditch your good manners and behave as if no one else in the world mattered. If there's something bugging you and you want to vent, fair enough, share and take it off your chest. But nasty remarks and snarky comments are, in principle, a really dishonest way of pulling oneself up, the way I see it.

It reminds me an awful lot of middle school :( |

Sometimes I wish I were not nasty. Sometimes I resolve to be positive and that lasts all of a few days, LOL. So lately I have kinda decided it is pointless to try. :-) |

Exactly, and it doesn't really pick you up, it gives you a fake sense of a pick-me-up, but with a nasty edge. It's the saccharin of emotion.

Like anything new, it takes a lot of work at the start. I remember when I started wanting to turn my life around I had to really push it. Now, I'm so glad that I did. |

I've never thought of you as being nasty, tbh. |

There have been occasions when I've seriously upset people and I've decided my behaviour had gone too far. It certainly isn't something I do for the look of it. I just don't believe in bottling up emotions and putting on a facade, and because I'm quite thick-skinned and understanding, I assume people can take a bit of nastiness. It's not always the case. |

Good point. Some people will whinge and carry on at the drop of a hat. |

"Nasty" might be too strong a term. "Negative" or "hypercritical" might be better. |
