The Katrina 05 and Symbiosis 4 mixes are the only mixes I have before June of 2006 when a deadly computer virus wiped out all of my hard drives of music. It was an unfortunate incident as I was in the process of backing up all of my material on external hard drives connected to my computer. It was then I hung up the headphones and started skydiving. Here's what I am getting at:
I lost everything before that date, so arguing that I have played the same tracks from any point before I started purchasing music again is irrelevant. The only one who posts on this forum that I know for a fact has been to every single set (or most of them) that I have played in the state of Texas is Ryan (racingforhoes). He would be the only credible source regarding many live sets that were not recorded on 'how my music never evolves' and 'how I played the same tracks over n over'.
Either way, none of this has any bearing on the fact that I am not getting to play any gigs...anywhere. All of this is irrelevant to the fact that politics governs the scene, not talent, and not track selections. I play songs I like, and don't play songs I don't like.
My question is......why does any of this matter to you? :) Do you HATE the fact I got to play all the gigs I have? Do you HATE the fact I'm one of the only few in Texas who has even played in Miami and Colombia? Is the a Marine vs Navy thing? :P I mean cmon! lol You have gone to great lengths in attempt to discredit me, whether you admit to doing so or not, so what's your beef pal?

As I have seen this guy play at every single event in Texas he has had the pleasure of opening for Kenneth Thomas, Ferry Corsten, Gabriel & Dresden, and Pau van Dyk, just to name a few. He took those crowds on a journey and I can say without a doubt that his track selection was spot on for each event. Even getting kudos from those that he opened up for as he did a great job. Yea, some of the same tracks reappear, but , just cause you play a track once doesnt mean it goes to the trash... Unless your Zild, then you have to erase it eventually to make room for some midget-porn on the HD
Either way, the guy is awesome live and its a shame Matt fell out of the circuit when he did. |

what it matters to me ? no im not envious in any way shape or form for your short success in the scene. Honestly, im happy for the fact that you played where you played but it doesnt impress me any. also, im not trying to discredit you. im not insulting you or making you look like an inferior dj. its still constructive criticism. theres no beef either. ive listened to your sets and i wasnt impressed. people hype you up and i put out my valid opinion. if you dont want your sets opinionated then dont post them on TA. i wouldnt say its hating. im going to use this as a MILD refrence because i know how radical your feelings are to this refrence but im going to use it anyway. when you were playing out with jojo i saw it as the james reed and promoter thing. its all about who you know to be playing out at shows like these. but then again this is another dj/producers point of view and not average listeners POV.
another note, when you used to play out and id run into you you always gave me this vibe i didnt appreciate. i remember there was a time when id came up to you @ sky and id say 'whats up' and you would brush me off or acted like you barely remembered me (post katrina pvd). there was another occasion where i was told about your ego trip. i remember sean carnahan telling me about how you lent him your cdjs for davenport one night and you said to him "just like old times eh sean ? back when i was a nobody..."
then there are the times where my friends tell me about how they see you at shows and you always say things like "im so much better than that dj" or something like that.
personally, if i dont have much nice things to say about a LOCAL houston jock id usually keep it to myself or id say it in a constructive manner. im not insulting you or beefin. the relationship we have now is much better than what we had in the past. how this is going to affect it i dont know. hope you dont take it personal but thats my 0.02. |

... Hell, I could have played the same track twice in a set and 90% of them wouldn't of noticed. They just liked the music I selected to play at that particular set, and it's only those people that I try to reach and make proud.
If you really wanna nitpick and try to make some more criticisms that really won't make a bit of difference, here... I'll post every last tracklist and you can tell me how much of a hack, recycler, or whatever the f*ck you wish to label me as :) |
05 and 08 : the transatlantic song was in the mix cd you made for the pvd show and in the passion set.
i could honestly see you playing a track twice in a set.
i dont see the point of putting your sets on here so i could point out repeats. all i was saying is that you recycle tracks more than anyone i know. kinda like a modern AVB :0) |

I can't make any excuses for this because I barely remember the nights other than the sets themselves. I don't have a reason to blow anyone off so it didn't happen intentionally. As far as ego trips go, there's plenty of DJs in texas who really had them. I consider myself pretty humble in comparison...but then again, everyone has their opinion.
I'll be honest, maybe its because of the adhd or whatever I have, lol, but there are times when people come up to me that I've met briefly once or twice that get pissed or discouraged when I don't recognize them off the bat. There were times right before a gig where a great number of people try to shake my hand and greet me before a set where it probably seemed like I blew them off. Not the case. I get very, very nervous before every set I play and I tend to have a one-track mind about what I might play and trying to calm myself down before I'm scheduled to go on. *shrug* It might seem like I'm blowing someone off if my mind it actually elsewhere, but I don't do that kind of . After a set, I make a point to try to find the people I know.

This never happened. I've never made such a statement anytime I've lent him my equipment.

I don't recollect saying anything like that either. THere were countless things said behind my back from those who lack credibility or the integrity to have their facts straight. I can't verify anything as I didn't hear them myself.

I sent a pm regarding this.
As far as how I rate my skills, they are what they are. I strive for perfection and I never release a mix unless I feels it surpasses the previous one. I've played sets that have brought the house down as well as those which didn't quite get the crowds going as much. I would never say I was better than anyone else, that my tracks were better than anyone else, or anything like that. I competed only against myself.
I have no problems with criticism. Its how I improve in the end. If the criticism is valid, I'll thank the person for bringing it to my attention or mention why there was a up in that part of the set. If the information is flawed, or if I feel it is, I will challenge it as I have done in this thread. I've been told I am defensive, well...they are probably correct. When my blood pressure goes up, I feel a tendency to say something. It doesn't mean I had my feelings hurt, it's just hard for me to bite my tongue.
Last of all, and this kinda bothers me, but I've never heard of sean carnahan saying anything behind my back unless it was from someone who was trying to start drama. If sean had an issue with me, he's the kind of person to say it to my face...and he has on occasion. I do understand that there were people telling sean such bull like I "was too good to play at his events" as well as sean and others getting the idea I had moved to austin to play at jojo's events. There were also rumors surrounding why me and Jojo parted ways. -- That is the main thing I hate about this scene. There are backstabbers who pretend to be your friends to your face and then take pleasure in trying to discredit you behind your back.
I gotta get to work, but I sent a pm over this. I'll make sure to throw away all the music I've played in a set or on a mix when I get back:o |

To try to give a bottom line to all this nonsense: I don't have any problems with anyone that hasn't lied to me (or about me), cheated, or stole from me. If someone has a difference in opinion, it's all good.
I can take criticism if its done with tact. I'm always open to feedback and suggestions as they have helped me improve my mixing and my sets. Music is subjective, and I never expected everyone to like my music. Unlike certain elitist elements that exist in the electronic music scene, I do not consider what I play better than anyone else's. My ears tell me which tracks I should invest in, not charts. And with that I am fortunate and feel thankful that alot of people happen to enjoy the music I bring to the table. And as long as they continue to enjoy it, I will keep on doing this as a hobby. 3-4 years ago I had hopes of going on tour and becoming a headliner, big time producer etc. While those goals may still be a possibility, I must invest in my 'real' career so I have something to fall back on if another promoter screws me over. Which brings me to my next subject.
Many wonder why I dropped out of the scene and spent more time partying with the skydivers at spaceland after the last plane landed. Simple. The electronic music scene is full of people who lack integrity. If a person is jealous of another's success, they will tell malicious lies to attempt to affect that DJs credibility. That is most of the reason I get very defensive when someone doesn't have their facts straight. The lying and backstabbing along with the snobbish, materialistic bitches who try to flirt with you to get VIP tickets really put me off. Its amazing how alot of so called 'friends' disappeared weeks after me not playing out.
Whereas the skydiving scene, everyone looks out for each other. No one backstabs because just about everyone knows how to think for themselves and will not hesitate to correct someone who is full of . That's all I have to say on that.
So.. bottom line. People can think whatever they want of me. They don't pay my bills nor cut my paychecks. I'll admit to any mistake I made that is valid, but if something is said about me that is inaccurate or an outright lie..I will correct your facts for you :)
Thanks for listening to the mixes, more to come. |

Wow this thread went to .
Matt keep doing what your doing. I can see both points to what all is being said here and only thing i can say is when your playing in a club who cares what your playing as long as it's working. there are some tracks i play a bunch cause they work in a club gig.
But i can see Lizandro saying if your making a mix cd that isnt recorded live make it a cd where you dont play the same track as what you may have played in another compilation cd. It can still be an old track just dont make 2 compilation cd's with the same song in them.
But if it is a cd that was recorded live and it has a few tracks in it that were on one or some of your compilation cd's then that is perfectly ok in my opinion.
Also remember that it's the end of the year and some people are shooting for some awards hehe so take it as a grain of salt.
my.02
You do a good job at what you do and i was impressed with Friday also. |
