while i agree with and love the idealists, and would much prefer to be making/playing games for a living, at some stage most of us have to take a reality check and realise $$ and job security become really important.
this "stage" is normally referred to as being old :( |

I like how people are able to rationalize their failure. |

:haha: somehow i don't think chasing the title of quake 3 champion would've been a responsible decision! |

That's very Marxist of you. Unfortunately, there are a whole host of vocations that exceedingly few people are passionate about that are incredibly important for our society to function. Sanitation comes to mind; very few people are passionate about haulling trash to landfills; however, if this service were not provided we would either have to do it ourselves (inefficient) or live in filth (resulting in a resurgence of diseases no longer found in the developed world). While idealism is great and we'd all love to live in Karl's utopia it simply isn't practical. |

have you ever thought about how that job can quickly lose it's appeal? it can get to the point where you really don't give a anymore about this thing you were once passionate about. now it's just your job and any sacrifices you might have made to attain this dream job now make you feel like you wasted your time. obviously i'm a tad bitter...
anyway i agree with pkcRAISTLIN you reach a point where money and security are key. i would leave my job in a moment to make more money have increased security and regular hours. |

Different strokes, I guess. I know people that just don't care about having "a job they like", whereas I've been able to live according to my idealism. So far, there have been some problems, but I'm where I want. |

I'm just gonna live. Sounds crazy, ya?
Here's the voicemail I left my boss:
"Hey Rob, uh, yea... I'm not going to be going back to work tomorrow... or ever again. That place is a disaster. Give me a call to let me know when I can pick up my final paycheck. Bye. CLICK!"
Time to practice the guitar, bring out the alto sax that's been hiding in my closest, buy records, and play some mothering music... |

Don't get me wrong... I love my job, it's all I ever really wanted to do. What I'm saying is that not everyone can pursue their passion because our society wouldn't function without the crappy assed jobs that no one wants. |

sex & cash theory... get one job that pays the bills, and another that allows you to be creative and work at something you're passionate about.
i think it's a logical way to get by, especially as a graphic designer. my last job was doing web design for an industry that i feel pretty indifferent about, but i was good at it and i brought home a fat paycheck every two weeks. on the side, i do freelance design for record labels, promotion companies, clubs, etc... which allows me to do something i'm passionate about. if i could combine my love of graphic design and electronic music and get by doing ONLY that, i'd be in heaven. but i know it's unlikely and probably won't pay very well. |

while i agree, some people don't have a safety net and must sometimes do things they don't like because the bills won't pay themselves with passion. |
