So I just let it ring. It rang, then it sounded like someone picked up, and hung up. Then it stopped the message and I was able to delete it.
I seriously don't know what the but I guess we will see on the bill. |

Did you try...phoning your service provider? |

| the only way to fix this is to look in the bathroom mirror and say "candyman" 3 times. |

I deleted a number of those weird "messages" in the past - you should be fine
the only downside is getting to the end of it to delete it |

You need to phone and report this to your provider ASAP....in the event you get strange charges....if you have done nothing to alert your provider...you do nothing to mitigate your damages....
I saw that on the People's Court! |

Sounds like some idiot might have tried (unsuccessfully) to bring you into a conference call, who knows.
It's pretty much impossible to force a phone to dial out while it's in the middle of a call. Even if the tones are simulated perfectly, the line is still connected, so it won't accomplish anything. Plus, cell phones today are all digital networks, I'm pretty sure they don't even use tones to dial; making a call is more like firing off an MSN message or starting a Skype session than dialing on an old-school telephone.
You know you can press 33 to skip to the end of a voice mail, right? You don't have to sit through the whole message. |

yup. it wasn't responding tho.
yeah, it's the digital phone network that scares me. since you don't need a tone, i basically am dialing into a computer, who is to say that that computer can't be hacked to with my connection. it would be pretty slick. |

I'm sure it can, but not in the way that you're imagining. When you're listening to a voice message it's literally happening on a completely different "layer" from when you dial. It would be like an MP3 causing your computer to connect to a random internet site and download files... it's just not possible.
I can see how this type of recorded message could potentially mess with voice mail functions - the VM system is still "analog" and responds to tones, and most cell phones are so small that you get a little feedback (output from the speaker trickling back into the mic). Can't really be used to "hack" since there are only a couple of functions available while a message is playing, but could theoretically interfere with other functions like message skipping. If that really is the problem (and I'm not at all sure that it is), you could solve it by covering the mic with your hand. |

but isn't there an option, "call this person back, press 8" or whatever. then the system dials for you and connects.
and aren't their mp3s that carry spyware which reports to some random website after it installs itself?
well i obviously know very little about how phones work. lol. |

Yes. That is a function of the network; you can generally forward your own incoming calls too, similar to how the VM system does. The VM system is programmed to respond at a specific time to a specific command by transferring you to a specific number (the one it has stored as the caller).
Theoretically it's possible for someone to spoof their phone number so that when you activate the "call back" function it would dial some arbitrary number; the problem with this is that the "call back" function is not available when the message is actually playing. It's only available after the message has finished, or in some cases when you press 5 to get the detailed call info. So even if the VM system were dumb enough to interpret the recorded message as key presses from you (and most aren't), it would still be impossible to initiate a callback "remotely".
