Nerd hackers of TOTA tell me if this is possible...

So yesterday I got a phone call on my cell phone from a phone number where the name I didn't recognize. I didn't answer it because I wasn't near my phone but I checked the messages right away and there was nothing there so I figured it was just a wrong number.

I got another call this morning where the person did leave a message so I went to check the messages and there were 2 messages when I was expecting 1.

The first message plays and at first it sounds like a hang up but after a second of silence my phone starts ringing as if I am calling some place. I figured I pressed a wrong button and I tried again. The same exact thing happened. I also checked if I can delete the message before it finishes and I can't. It just repeats calling out to someplace.

I am afraid that this is some sort of scam and since I called some mystery number I will get crazy charges on my phone bill.

Granted, I didn't wait around until the phone connected to someplace so therefore shouldn't be charged but could this be a great way to scam people into dialing some paid numbers and making loads of cash?

Is this possible nerds?

also, i know that nerd hackers is probably not the right terminology since these types take their labels very seriously. i apologize in advance to all the smart types that may be able to answer this question for me.

from a nerd hacker to a noob; looks like you were called by a conferencing service, that calls multiple people and connects them together

so that call that you're hearing is probably a recorded call on your answering machine while this service was calling someone else,
Endlesswave
It is possible.
Keep track of the phone number that called you (if you can get it) and search online of this happened to other people with that number.

Report it to fraud busters. ;)

from what i understand from my old phreaking days, it is only possible for your line to dial out if bell canada hears the proper tones (1 makes a certain tone, 2 makes a certain tone, etc.) but it would still need to have the line on dial tone to do so.

so basically... no. you will not get 416-MAN-LINE charges to your bill.

hmmm.

that's a good probability. but why doesn't it delete when I try to delete the message? if it's just a recording, then I should be able to delete it like any other message. Do you think I should just let it ring and finish?

This.

However, just keep record of it in case your next bill isn't quite kosher (and make sure to check your billing period ON the bill).

More than likely you're fine. :)
