Computer question

So I took apart this computer to show a kid how it worked. When I put it back together, it doesn't want to start anymore. I'v checked and rechecked all the inside connections. When I plug the power supply in, the motherboard turns on without me pushing the power button. The computer monitor gives that, "check connection" display, and then goes into hibernation mode. The computer was working just fine before I took it apart. Could it have been that when I shut the computer down, I had accidentally unhooked the power supply from the wall jack, while the computer was still shutting down? Could that be it?

It's a Dell, Pentium 4 processor, basically from the early 2000's, running windows xp. 512RAM, 1.(something) ghz.

I'v done this before with my own computer and this never happened.

Generally speaking, it's a good idea to understand something before you try to teach it to someone else. Generally.

That is admittedly unlucky mate, but at least it's a cheap POS computer.

I'm certainly not a technical wizard, so I sadly can't offer any help with the matter.

Get ed. My home computer is an 800mHz.

It worked fine until I got a new anti-virus program.

I'm thinking I might have fried some components with static electricity. Damn...

Capitalizt
I was building a computer a few weeks ago and got it working for a few minutes but the USB ports didn't work for some reason..so I tried "adding" a small power cord a to port on the motherboard that had "USB" written on it. It was the proper type of connector for the spot, but when I powered it on the cord started melting and smoking, then the computer did that "immediately on" thing you described. I'm pretty sure something in the mobo is fried because of it..

Oh well, guess it's time for the kid to upgrade. ;) Either that, or you can find him a cheap replacement mobo to make your conscience feel better. Find out the exact model of the CPU and what socket it requires..and look here:
