just because you don't literally laugh, doesn't mean you don't find something funny. so i think people who use "lol" that way are just trying to express that they think something is funny to the reader.
did you really need that explanation? |

| Things that are actually funny can speak for themselves. They don't need "lol" appended to them. |

No, I think it's more complicated than that.
I just realized some people also use it as a way to communicate they mean no harm (in an internet argument for example).

That's natural. Once a word (or an acronym) is picked up and used frequently, it tends to acquire a broader meaning as newcomers fail to understand what the original meaning is (or simply because there's a semantic bleaching, often even among old speakers). Most people even read it as a proper word nowadays, it seems, instead of saying "L.O.L.". This probably means that "lol" is on its way to becoming a proper word, reason why it can be conjugated (I lol'd), and I believe English speakers would see nothing wrong if they read the sentence "Mary likes to lol at dying kittens". At least, not linguistically :p
I used to say that in Portuguese myself (though we pronounce the final "l" as "w", so it sounds like "loh-w"), and wasn't in the least surprised to see some of my students saying it as well. As far as I can tell, it here means something like "I meant to chuckle because it is dumb, but I decided to vocalise it as a word instead". |

i can casually say "omg!", "lol!" or "lulz!" in a conversation, but with a certain number of people that are familiar with web slang. we even have a literal saying "for the lulz" |
