did you really need that explanation?

You use it as a verbal (written) tic, though. Almost everything you post, no matter how unfunny the content is, is followed by a "lol".

Many people use words because they feel or sound right, not because of any semantic content. It is becoming mindless filler, just as saying "like" is. "I was like whatever lol".

Unlike JBJ, who is still yearning for some mythical cultural golden age that happened in the recent past, I welcome Internet speak and its linguistic invention. It's fun to play around with, to subvert and to use to subvert other registers.

That being said, I rarely, if ever, use filler words like "lol" online. Internet speak, like txt speak, turns everyone into identical-sounding clones, their thoughts clipped by the language use. I like to keep my own style, so I sound like myself.

Blah blah blah, this is the same old tripe anyone vomits up when I state my personal preference -- which I acknowledge as a personal preference, not a prescription. Good job being predictable.

I would bet money nobody has ever used the word "mythical cultural golden age" in response to your anti-Internet, anti-modernity rants.

No, they just used other phrases that were synonymous. You are a unique snowflake.

*shrugs*

i dont really care about coming off as unique. i just go with what's easy or common when it comes to communicating via text or internet.

I think the French language is ugly too. Should we ban it along with internetese? I also hate the sound "r" in English, should we save the English language from its pernicious influence as well?

Languages are not supposed to fit our aesthetic judgements. They're tools: if people find a new way to use language, then so be it. The tool is theirs.
