When "actors" lose their appeal to adult viewers they're inclined to turn to the child audience.

Pretty weird.
It's possible that he had a lot of oil/sweat/makeup on his face, and the camera flash wasn't filtered in any way, resulting in the 'hi I'm white now' effect...
