Backing up Gmail
View this Thread in Original format

After hearing about the disaster with the Sidekicks, and everyone losing their data, I've gotten pretty paranoid about backing up my email. I rely heavily on Gmail and have thousands of emails saved and broken down into folders. I thought now would be a good time to back these emails up.

I just wanted to see if anyone had any recommendations on how to do this. I've done a bit of research online, but I didn't see anything that was quick, efficient (and something I understood how to do! lol).

Note: I don't want to do it through Outlook, b/c I don't like Outlook and do not use it.

Thanks :)

i think the only easy options are by using mail programs like outlook.. if you don't like it there are a lot of other ones such as thunderbird. in all of them you should be able to highlight all of your emails and export them into 1 file

I came across the name "Thunderbird" in a few of my searches. What is it and where can I get it? I skipped over that suggestion b/c I had no idea what it was! lol

It's a Mozilla product, like Firefox. I use it, mainly because it was a better alternative in the pre-2007 Office days and I've gotten used to it. If not for that then I'd probably just use Outlook 2007, it's improved a lot.

In any event:

export your contacts as a CSV file. You can use that CSV file in pretty much any email software and also edit it from Excel.

click on the "contacts" tab in Gmail, then export option on the top right side.

Gmail lost people's e-mails?

Edit: ok, I read about the Sidekicks fiasco, but I still don't understand what gmail has to do with that.

I want to back up emails, not my contacts.

Edit: I backed up my contacts anyway though! Thanks :)

B/c if the same thing ever happened to Gmail, my emails would be gone.

My problem with Outlook was just that I could never get it to work. I try setting up an account and for one reason or another it keeps giving me errors, so I said screw it.

Edit: I've downloaded Thunderbird and am starting to import emails (I think?). It's not importing any of the folders though and all of the emails it's imported thus far are all old emails that are in folders (but they're just showing up in the inbox). Does it import folders? How did you sync everything with Gmail?

I didn't. I don't use Gmail except when I need an address for spamtacular websites that require you to register. :p

Did you try following the instructions on Google?

I recommend printing them onto good old fashion paper and put them in a folder marked e-mails

Easiest way to do it... even if you only back it up once a month or something. It's balls easy to intergrate a gmail account into Outlook and once you import all your emails into Outlook, you just save your PST. Done...

Carry on using GMAIL with the web interface for a month or two, then go back to OUTLOOK, save/backup your PST again...
