Very true... to each their own. I love Avalon. I walked in once after not going for awhile and picked up some weird vibes @ Avalon, but that was because I was picking up on the energy of the people in attendance and not the actual building itself. Avalon will always be a favorite of mine since I first played there on the terrace for After Hour Power back in 2001 and for Chemistry on the main stage in 2002 and 2003. I love that place. The mainstage is such an awesome stage to play on. I used to go to rock and punk shows when Avalon was still called The Palace. I saw the Lemonheads, Nine Inch Nails, Blink 182, Circle Jerks, Beck, The Beastie Boys, Green Day, and Soul Asylum there just to name a few bands.

Ya know, first couple times I went to Avalon it was that way, but not since I moved down here. They could spice up central part between the front and the main room. That part feels oober dirty.

They used to have a round circular couch there that was pretty cool, but they took it out for some reason.

Oh yeah, $11 for a shot of WELL vodka is f'n absurd ($13 for vodka-rebull). It's a an everyday person's club, not some high-end place.

It wasn't that much last time I was there either. I think it was $10 $11 for a vodka+redbull

Yeah, it is pretty absurd. They charged my friend $18 for a Pineapple Express (Grey Goose, Pineapple, and Red Bull).

If you get in on the Music Savages guest list you can get $5 well vodka drinks with mixers like 7-Up and Cranberry in the Jerry Lewis room. Can't beat that!!!

Or maybe it was Cameron's list or both. $5 drinks = good times!!! :D

I went to both clubs last night and can't really say one was better than the other. I saw the fight Dave T wrote about, right in front of me (I was on the very left). I don't have the best impression of the security at either Vanguard or Avalon, and, yes there are fights at Avalon as well. My guess in this case is that the security guy at the stage has as his number one priority not to let people get up there, so they had to bring security people from the back (I saw two guys show up, too late, that's true). As for Vanguard crowd, it's definitely more of a house crowd by now, it wasn't that way a year and a half ago, but it was better than for other trance headliners where people started leaving early. Agree about the kryo, and the lighting has been underutilized for a long time now. Drinks are most expensive at Vanguard, yes. Talking about Avalon, they've remodelled the front at least twice, they added some paintings with spot lights recently that look cool.

You should have went to Avalon. What the heck were you thinking son??? Vanguard sucks. Giant and Insomniac need to find a better venue. That place is spooked to hell. I always get weird vibes there. There is a very odd energy about that building. Great DJs play there, awesome event coordinators and production teams, but the venue is just horrid. The only cool thing about the venue is the stage, lighting, and sound. Other than that, it is way too overcrowded and poorly set up. I think it was an old ice or meat factory in the past, right? They must have chopped up some bodies in there and the ghosts are still around. ;)

Avalon is the last club I set foot in anymore...gets sardine packed, anywhere outside is like a fumigation tent for termites, they close the upstairs area just when people would like to chill out and then it's über packed later so not any room to chill out. Would only go there as a last resort, maybe for Digweed again or something. Vanguard has some great bartenders, never dealt with the security either place though. Guestlist is more organized at Vanguard too, but the parking blows at both these clubs. Guess I would have to say that Circus > Vanguard > Avalon.

The best area at Avalon is right up front stage-left closest to Jerry Lewis Room or in the Jerry Lewis room for Music Savages or Bryan Hustle, Nic Fiorina, and Bernard Thomas.

If you really want to get down, come to CIRCUS this Saturday. You won't be disappointed. If you like trance... ANDR3X and I are going to throw down a wicked set and I'm sure that John Askew has a few tricks up his sleeve. Mike Lord and DJ Zan will also be rocking it in the side room with Robert Stern. All three of these guys know what they are doing on the decks and never fail to disappoint. So if you are fed up with Vanguard and Avalon, come to the club with the best vibes and DJs in town. We have a spacious patio that is termite-free.

The person on the stairs wasn't even paying attention. Not until the fight blew past behind him. And he didn't even do much then. He just walked down the steps and walked over to the fight. To the point that the other security people got there before he did. He wasn't even trying.

If a security person is on the stage and there is a fight right there, he should go after the fight. That's far more important. It's a safety issue. THen if someone is up there who shouldn't be afterwards, get them off. In most cases, people will respect that insance and there will be no issues people coming up on the stage when they shouldn't be.

What if one of them had a weapon? The shoudl never assume they couldn't get something past security. Something bad could have happened and that's why it's important to be as responsive as possible.

I've seen a lot of fights and never saw such a dismal response.

I agree with Silvia on this. I can't even remember the last time I went to Avalon on a Saturday night. I can't stand that place.

I'm glad we missed the fight at Vanguard. It normally takes me less than 30 mins to get to Hollywood but on Saturday, it took me more than 2 hrs because of the freeways accidents and detours, and the surface streets were completely congested. I had to revise my route plan 5 times before I got to Vanguard  Luckily, Vanguard had no line and we had room to dance the whole night. Sander's set was amaaaazing and I couldn't stop dancing even though my penguin slippers made me sweat like in a sauna :p And the awesome part was they let Sander play overtime about 20 mins when the club was supposed to close. I was sober the whole night because I got to the club so late and there were so many cops on the road but I got my high from the music. Sander RAWKED!!! Pretty much the only negatives were the sound (way too loud, even on stage behind the speakers) and lack of lights. I heard several people complain about these.

Thanks Michelle for being so patient & waiting for me and for being my PIC! :happy2:

The drinks are cheaper at Circus too.

I checked the roads to see how traffic was at 8pm and was like DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMN. Black everywhere. Ther were a couple strreet roads witha couple green spots and the rest had no data...so I wrote down directions to zig-zag through those roads thinking I doubt any other route would be better.

It's usualyl about a 25 minuet drive. I wanted to give us at least an hour to get there, maybe upto 90 minutes. In the end, it took less than 25 minutes the way I went. I somehow found roads that had few lights compared to the other streets and we zig-zagged through the screwed up streets and never encountered traffic once. We got there in under 25 minutes, an hour before we wanted to really be there hehe...
