Maybe I just have a twisted view on music but I think that making the kick the loudest element of a mix is a terrible idea. It should drive the track, not drown it out.
It could be that I'm misunderstanding exactly what you mean by

Or maybe you're making hardstyle. :p |

While kicks don't seem like they are the loudest part of the trance productions they are 99.9% of the time.
The kick is...you know...what makes people dance;) |

Hi folks, I'm totally new to producing and I need some help. I'm using FL studio 8. I've been trying to make some trance beats at about 138-140bpm, trying to make some progressive trance. I have a kick drum with a clappy type sound on every other beat, and a hi-hat sound somewhere in the middle of every beat. The sound is not powerful enough and sounds really poor. When the basslines kick back in on the melody they hardly even penetrate through. It sounds so flat and dull. How do I go about improving. I really need help because I don't know what to do next. Thanks. |
If you use FL Studio 8 try posting an flp.
I can go in and check what you're doing on a project level and give you a better idea what you're doing wrong.
Its usually ALWAYS either choosing poor samples, or mixing them the wrong way (usually the latter) but if you post an flp I can open it on my FL Studio and let you know. |

| I agree. Post up the FLP complete as a zipped file (FL lets you export like this). I can take a look at it too. |

Mr Mystery did an excellent tutorial on this exact subject and you will find it in the FAQ Tutorial list. It has a step by step guide with samples included.
Anyone who has not checked this out should do so immedaitely.
Another reason why I can't wait for the mod to step forth. |

I don't understand - are you saying that the mod is going to make sure that we watch the video? :conf: |

so that people like floyd that call others retarded for stating an EDM music standard get some time out. The kick is almost always the loudest element. |

what you really want to do is get a new DAW (digital audio work station) FL studio is just not up to par. Sounds it produces are inherently "thin" basically meaning that they are not ever going to deliver that punch. Many DAWs these days have that problem. There are ways around it (such as layering multiple tracks with the same notes) but that would just take up time that could be spent more creatively. One DAW that I could suggest would be LOGIC (7-9 any are good) or REASON if you are just starting out. All the presets and sounds that come standard on those are 'fat' making them more punchy and thus giving you more time to spend creatively.
Another thing youi might try is just always be listening to Trance. Get yourself a nice pair of headphones and a MP3 players and just walk around everywhere with it on. One of the reasons why your sound is probably falling short is because you havnt quite trained your ear yet.
hope this helps. |

| All rhythm revolves around the kick. |
