So, why is it...?

...That quiet farts always seem to smell far more deadly than their louder counterparts?

I just let off a 'silent but violent' one, and pretty much had to clear the room (though with a certain level of pride, as has been previosly discussed here in the COR).

Is there some science behind this phenomenon?

Enquiring minds need answers.

I've always wondered the same thing. A+ thread.

There HAS to be an answer.

Damn it, where the hell is Jenny?

it must filter through the turd...thus silencing the fart and making it more aromatic.

i think its more related to temperature than noise.

This. I'm very good at gauging the degree at which my farts are going to smell, and it's based primarily off of how warm the crack of my ass feels when I let it out.

Of course it does. A warm fart vaporises your poo as it passes, causing more stink particles to be present in the gas when it is expelled.

I can understand the reasoning behind that :)

So, the next logical question would be, why does a hot fart make less noise than a cooler fart?

Lol, cooler fart.

Not always the case, my friend.

Yes, I suppose that's true. I shouldn't be jumping the gun on this.

But let's face it - Noise seems to come into the farting deal at SOME point, right? Quiet farts are, more often than not, deadly in smell. Whereas, the louder 'BRAAARP' farts generally consist of a less offensive odour.

Perhaps the sheer force of the 'BRAAARP' shifts the poo particles further further from the olfactory senses, resulting in a less concentrated aroma?

When you are really flatulent, which huge ripping farts, the main gas is mostly carbon dioxide, since the big ones are from some sugar (or carbohydrates) fermenting in your intestines producing a lot of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is odorless. When you are having tiny farts, mostly those are from anaerobic fermentation, which produces a lot of methane and sulfides. The methane isn't a problem in terms of smell (although you can light it), but the sulfides stink. This isn't a hard and fast rule, since you can be producing a lot of CO2 and some sulfides at the same time, which is why people have observed here that you can big stinky farts as well. I'm sure if you googled "flatulence fermentation" you would find out some more on this. Below are a couple of links from non-chemists discussing some of what I've said above.
