Also, try this experiment, get a few blank pieces of paper and pre-write a bunch of music bars on them (without the stave), play one of your fav tracks (numerous times) and mark on the bars where things are happening, especially rhythmic things, you'd be suprised as to how much is going on and how, even within a song that our ears perceive as simple. Taking note of the panning is important too. Hope this helps,

If you have Ableton Live, the easier thing to do would be to warp the song, and then add midi tracks of all of the sounds you hear. Then rename the midi clips for adding comments. After you are done, you can just hit "Print Scr" on your keyboard and paste it into microsoft paint to save it so you don't have to save the project file or the song. |

Even easier than that, you can go to arrangement page, on the top of the timeline, right click and click "add locator", then right click the locator and rename it and add whatever notes needed. |

Once I tried to replicate the whining buildup hoover sound by recording a drill head spinning very fast, then upping the pitch in Cubase and adding some FX VST's to make it sound big, epic croud exciter. |

Not having a go, but seriously, more meaningful ("seriously anal") text is what is needed round here badly.
As for tension, I find simply removing many elements to near total silence (fading/cutting etc) very effective - if done while slowly introducing one big new one (fx'd to hell) that crescendos then drops with all the elements back, gives a feeling of anticipation and release.
Also noises that make you uncomfortable or anxious are always handy for tension - think about rough scraping noises, angle grinders, jet engines opening up or planes taking off (done to great effect in Insight - prophecy). |
