I can take solace in the fact that I have nothing of any real value to my name. That pretty much makes me litigiously invincible! As my torts lecturer used to say: "you can't get blood from a stone".:stongue: |

I have triple citizenship. I'd imagine that any legal proceeding against me from a foreign nation which I've barely even been to would have a lot of trouble first of all pinpointing which nation to contact first, then actually doing anything.
Especially Croatia. Not only would they laugh anything off but they would intentionally make the Americans lives impossible just out of pure spite. I love it :haha: |

Isn't assault a crime? |
In most common law jurisdictions, it's highly unlikely that would constitute assault.
But in the Brazilian civil law system? I couldn't tell you. |

Thanks for the ideas, everyone.
No, Stu, I'm not going to talk to Takahashi unless he approaches me first. I'll tell the student to apologise right away, and then go to his office apologise some more next Monday. Apart from that, I don't really want to get involved unless they fail to sort it out for themselves. If I hurry too much, my presence will only make things worse.
By the way, the professor can easily sue the guy. We work in a public university and, as public servants, we're protected by the law: should anyone threaten, diss, and/or insult us, we can (theoretically) sue them.

Well, as a TA member you have a responsibility to tells us how this evolves. |
I'm well aware of that, and will report regularly (even if it just fizzles out), changing the names of everyone involved for obvious reasons.

As a friend, I don't think you can do much for him. What types of pizzas do you sell? |
Mozzarella and spam. Margherita and spam. Spam, spam, spam, pepperoni, and spam. And spam, spam, quattro formaggi, spam, and spam. |

2:05 AM - I receive a phone call:
"Pizza delivery, may I help you?" [I still thought it was a joke up to this point]
"Lira? I just did something really stupid." [His voice was really distressed]
"Who is this?"
"This is Akira* [He's my assistant]. I did something really really stupid"
"You broke up with Claire* last semester, and that was a pretty stupid thing to do. Please tell me you didn't break up with your new girlfriend, she's head over hee--"
"I threatened to kick professor Takahashi's* arse."
"You did what!?"
"Remember that, during his class, you came by the door and handed me some exams for me to correct?"
"Yes, of course, but that's not exactly unusual, and you did nothing wrong"
"Well, some students were making a very boring presentation, and I decided to correct them to spend the time."
"I'm listening"
"Professor Takahashi approached me and asked what I was doing. I said I was 'doing some stuff'. He said I wasn't showing my classmates any respect, and he said I should leave the classroom if I wanted to do something else. So I did."
"You bloody left the room?"
"Yes. But, that's not the stupid bit"
"Did you fart before you left?"
"After the class was over, I decided to have a word with him. But, I was so angry that, when I saw him, I pointed my finger at his forehead and said he was the one being disrespectful, because I was doing my thing, I didn't bother anyone else, and it was really rude to approach me like that. Then I said that, should he ever do it again, I'd kick his ing arse"
"WAT"
"Yeah, that's what he said. I then spelled it out for him. 'Assu kikku, do you understand that, professor Takahashi?', I said about to smash my fist into his face"
"Bloody hell, what the hell did you do that for? He's barely a threat to anyone!"
"Yeah, I know, I just committed academic suicide"
"All right, calm down. Where are you now?"
"I'm at a friend's place. Professor Takahashi is going back to Japan, right?"
"Yeah, he is... but not before telling everyone you threatened him"
"What do I do?"
"Well, what can I say? Had you phoned me after he expelled you from his class, I could've calmed you down or something. But..."
"I know, I know... I decided to call you because I see you as a friend. Still, I don't know what to do. I'm stressed and I was nervous and...."
"Listen, I can't talk to you right now because I'm at my rents' and everybody is sleeping. Are you free tomorrow night?"
"Yes, I am."
"Good. Talk to you tomorrow then."
"Thanks, I'm sorry"
"Well, you should be. But, I'll talk to you about that tomorrow night"
Wow, he's a good student, I can't really understand why he snapped like that. I'm still thinking about what the hell I can say to him now that he did such a stupid thing. I'm going to scold him for that tomorrow, and tell him to apologise straight away. But, if you were in my shoes, what would you do? I wonder how different TA's would react to this... I think I could use some different insights, given the gravity of this situation.

man. He is going to have to play the emotional distraught card. He will have to make up a story about a family member in a very bad situation and he thought he could handle it mentally himself. To make it believable, he will should offer to enroll in fake counseling classes.
Note: it better be a well thought out story.
If one of my students did that without me knowing circumstances i would kick them the out. plus more. |
