oh noes, that would involve some commitment, planning and desire to attend.

I work with Indian people - some have family reunions that have 300+ people show up from all over the world and not necessarily at x-mass. Crazy, I know.

I dunno - maybe it's the immigrant side of my brain... But this love for family was instilled in me to be a year round sort of thing, not "one and done, see u next x-mass"

IMHO, this urge to get together for winter solstice stems from our pagan roots. gather the clan to worship the sun in a stone henge

if we all got together on the fourth of july, somehow i think i'd be hearing you go off about how the firework industry is raping the mexicans you work with because of the mayan calendar and harry reid or some . my whole point was the holiday season is about spending time with loved ones, not buying a bunch of to throw away. i don't even know why you're trying to argue with me.

imo people gather around this time because spring and summer is for exploring and winter and fall is for reflecting. when it gets cold you stay in and fatten up, which is a good time for relatives to come together. it is more significant to see them a few times a year than all the time for many reasons. not the least of which is because family can get annoying quick.

My family does Secret Santa so no one is really stressed about presents.

My boyfriend's brother and sister go ing retarded buying presents for their kids.

Especially his sister.
Her daughter is two and a half years old and last year, their whole living room floor was absolutely COVERED in presents. She spent probably close to $700 on presents for her daughter, who was sitting in the corner playing with a pair of old socks and not knowing what was going on. Then she tried to get her to open some presents and the baby didn't want to so she started crying. So the mom opened all the presents that SHE had just wrapped, while trying to get her daughter to watch and be excited about it.
It was the most retarded thing I have ever seen in my life. I will never ever ever ever do that to my kids.

The reasons I ing love this time of year:

- I have 3 weeks off from school
- My bf and I get to spend mornings together
- My friends all come home from Uni or have 2 weeks off of work
- My mom cooks extra-amazing food
- I have time to hang out with my sister
- The lights everywhere are very pretty

the holidays are about spending time with your family and friends, not trees, lights and presents or wasting away at strip malls shopping for a bunch of you want and others have no use for. sadly most people don't understand that. they are slaves to consumerism.

Precisely. I spend time with my family and enjoy doing so but I don't feel the need to buy peoples love with presents intended to do just that, or participate in "lets whore up our homes with tacky lights"
