Well, since my Dell has basically crapped out on me it is time for me to search for a replacement. I want something that will run Reason and Serato Scratch. I am open to both Mac and PC. So, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
ready? go. |

Macs are overpriced bro. I keep trying to tell people that. The only thing I admire from Macs are their OS systems. That's not to say Windows 7 falls behind. As far as hardware goes, Apples have that same thing other PCs have. I just built a 4.3 ghz Quad-core PC with an ASUS mobo, 24gb of RAM, an ATI FireGL V8600 1gb video card with 2T of space (2,000 gb hard drive) all mounted on an aluminum mid-tower case with fancy touch-screen components and stuff. I spent less than $700, and maybe a few days of labor. You're paying for name, not performance.
Unless you like the whole touchpad thing on the new macbooks which I find is really the only thing I can think of that I'd like to have on my laptop, I would just stick with another laptop without having to spend bookoos of money. Then you could actually afford the gadgets you'll want to produce music. Between Ableton 7, the two PCs I've built, my two keyboards and my firewire, I've spent less than what my friend David just spent on the new 17" MacBook Pro. I'll even throw on some Mackie monitors I'm going to order this Christmas and an M-Audio sound card I'm looking at, and I'll still fall under $3000.
Steve Jobs has done a fantastic job of making Macs the "Mercedes" of all computers out there. |

I would agree on the Desktop, build your own. As for laptops, I've gone both ways, had one of the 1st Generation MacBook Pro's, then switched to an Asus GS1, now have a new MacBook Pro.
Hands down, go with the Mac. The 1st Generation I had had heat issues, which is why I sold it. It also was hard to find programs that were compatible with Mac's OSX. But now, it's completely redesigned and programs are equally available on Mac as they are on Windows. Not to mention, most of the main programs you will use for music are built to run on Mac, not Windows, so they are either only available for Mac or have issues with Windows. They simply run better on Mac. You also really need to buy an upgraded Windows machine to run most programs efficiently, so the price isn't that much of a difference. You don't have to do that with a Mac. My Asus was $1800 new when I bought it, my MacBook Pro $1899, and they've dropped the price on them to around $1500 now. The warranty & service is 10x what you will get for a Windows laptop too.
I'm a firm believer that Mac is the way to go, especially if you are going to be using it for music. I have the 15" MacBook Pro, and won't be switching back to Windows for a laptop anytime soon. |

| Also, if you buy a Macbook Pro, buy the base model, don't buy the upgrades at Apple's price. That is where they make their money. You can buy a bigger Hard Drive & Memory from Newegg.com and install them yourself. It's really easy to do on a Mac. |

Secondly, what kind of programs are you talking about that are "efficiently better" on Macs yet have issues when running on Windows? Have you even tried Windows 7? Why was it that when I ran 3 instances of AutoCAD and a movie on my friend's new Macbook Pro during the Pacquiao match last week, there were small amounts of lags present, but when I did the same on an Asus G72-Gx at school, I didn't catch one glitch? The Asus was barely reaching a PF usage of 500mb at a 10% cpu rate of each of the two processors while the Mac's system fan sounded like it was screaming for help.
I'm not trying to bash Mac because of its OS. I'm bashing Mac because of its overpriced hardware. Honestly I would prefer Mac OSX over Windows anyday, but I refuse to pay more money because of the Apple name. If I could find a macbook pro at a decent price, like the base system you mentioned, I would gladly pay that. But if I can still run Ableton without any problems on a different laptop I'd prefer using that.
I don't know...that's just personal preference. Maybe I need to get a Mac myself and try it out for a few weeks to see if I change my mind. |

That's exactly the same type issue I'm talking about, except the opposite. AutoCAD is a program that was designed on windows, then expanded to Mac. It's known it's more stable on Windows. You're also comparing apples to oranges, running it on a Quad Core/6 MB system vs. a Dual Core/2 GB system is going to create vastly different results in performance. But then again, Dirk isn't going to running anything close to CAD's requirements.
Yes, I've tried Windows 7, running it on my PC right now. The jury is still out on it, it's only been out for a couple of weeks. As for running Ableton on Vista, I have the same latency issues than vs. my MacBook Pro.
Which I'm sure now you're going to go into a "Vista Sucks" rant, but that's kinda my point. Mac OSX doesn't suck, it's actually stable & works. And it's easier to use. Who do you think Windows is trying to copy with Windows 7? |

| almost 2yrs on a macbook, and i will never buy a non-mac again...the lack of frustration, lack of crashes, and quick boots are worth the extra cash, imo. if you can't bring yourself to part with windows, get a macbook pro and run a dual OS. |

Mac OSX is pretty damn sweet, and that's why I said I'd prefer to use it over Windows anyday. And yea Vista needs to dissappear off the face of this earth asap. Ableton, CAD, Revit, Illustrator, Photoshop and 3DS Max are really the only programs I've used on Windows. I've used Ableton on a Mac and I can definitely say it's quicker. And, it sounds like Logic Pro is the way to go these days as well. I've also compared running iTunes on a Mac and on a PC, and I would definitely use it on a Mac anyday. It's just a matter of program compatibility.
People at school keep trying to talk me into partitioning my disc to use hackintosh (hacked Mac OSX on a non-mac system) and Windows 7, but I don't want to risk it. Who knows...maybe if I used the newer Mac for a few days it might change my mind. The newer Macbook Pro laptops look so much sleeker and cleaner than any other laptop I know. |

Mac ALL the way
The fact you can run osx and windows at same time or you can run just osx or just windows. cant go wrong. plus you wont have near as many problems running vst's in reason with a mac as you will run into on windows.
Mac's are expensive, but you get what you pay for |
