Exactly. I actually prefer it when they lie quiet and still. |

This is one of the most idiotic statements I've ever heard. This is a discussion board; subsequently, if one so chooses to post their opinion then they are inviting discussion. If one is inviting discussion regarding their opinion then one must be willing and able to defend it. Arguing that people are entitled to unsupported opinions so the rest of us should just "get used to them" is both an invalid argument and indicator that you don't have anything real upon which to base your opinion. You are correct in that you are welcome to whatever opinion you wish to have based on whatever bias you wish to retain; however, that does not mean the rest of us need suffer it. This notion that everyone's opinion matters equally is pure folly; as the learned, substantiated, supported, and well considered opinion of one individual is more valid then the opinions of a mob reacting to something without any of the aforementioned. Unless you can substantiate your opinion then it simply carries no weight; subsequently, it is immaterial and should be disregarded et al. So get used to THAT. |
Perfect response. |

I never said my opinion is more valid or better than anybody else. I am just saying people will always make unsupported ones whether or not they have anything to prove them. Sometimes an opinion is an opinion, regardless of whether or not people will justify it they will state it and stand by it. That's what I am saying. But I never said my opinion can't be argued either. it's like telling people you like a certain movie when the general public was against it. But, you liked it. Why? that's your opinion and you don't believe you need to support it. I also never said my opinion is absolute, or I am always right, or that there is no discussion allowed on my onion. Sometimes and opinion is based more on feelings and a state of mind rather than something factual. |

an opinion of personal taste is clearly distinguishable from an opinion on a matter regarding a situation with objective factual support (going either way). The only way to support a claim of personal taste is by stating a subject personal preference, which obviously can't be proven except with a self-serving personal statement. It is impossible for some to argue succesfully (i.e., to prove) that you personally don't like something if you say you do like it.
On the other hand, an opinion regarding factual circumstances can and must be supported by facts. It is clearly possible to argue that Japan is in worse shape than the US because there is a wealth of economic data (factual support) indicating this to be the case (e.g., GDP growth, debt levels, etc...). It is also valid to argue the opposite if you can support it with factual data.

An opinion based on feeling has no place in an intelligent discussion. |

The only way to support a claim of personal taste is by stating a subject personal preference, which obviously can't be proven except with a self-serving personal statement. It is impossible for some to argue successfully (i.e., to prove) that you personally don't like something if you say you do like it. | So...have you finally come to realization that what I said was more of a personal taste rather than a factual statement?

whether japan or russian is in better shape than the US is not a matter of personal taste! That issue can be argued with objective factual support on either side.
So, you're saying you think Japan is in better shape because of some stupid reason like: you like formal names with the letter J in it? Or, maybe you think russia is doing better because you think cold places are awesome.

No - i think vanilla ice cream is better than chocolate ice cream. I also think the blue is a nicer color than red, and girls are better looking than men. One noticeable aspect of each of these opinions is they are based my personal taste and can not be supported by objective facts.
You are posting in a discussion board in which other people post to have intelligent discussions about matters of politics and world affairs. If you comment on the health of the US versus Japan you invite a discussion about the topic. In general, there are two ways to win a debate: (1) point out the weakness in the other sides argument, and (2) present the strengths of your argument. Most skilled, and even unskilled, debaters use both tactics at the same time. That's how this works buddy; If you don't like it post in the COR. Although they will likely be much harsher and less reasoned than anyone in here.

Here's the thing. Your personal unsubstantiated opinion is by default, null and voided, by Jer's factually supported opinion. Why the hell should I take your word for something, or even give your view the time of day, when Jer here gives facts to back himself up?
Going further, Obama's opinion, and you might say, obligation, is to declare the greatness of the country he represents. We find it pretty ing retarded that you have a problem with that. |
