MEGARA VS DJ LEE THE INTERVIEW / Q&As

Creators of many hardtrance Anthems Nils Karsten & Michael-Lee Bock aka Megara vs DJ Lee run through the Q&A's:

Where did it all start for you?
I started dj-ing @ several private parties in 1986, in Germany Hamburg.

Where did the name come from?
DJ LEE is a part of my first name. It is Michael-Lee.
MEGARA is not a person, it is only a word. MEGARA was one of the oldest towns of Greece.

What gave you the initial push?
I think my father, a real rocker & one of the founder and one of the first Hells Angels in Germany, gave me the initial push to live the music… to be a dj and to produce music.

Who would you say was putting on the best events at the moment?
There are some best events I ever played… for example the DEFQON 1 in NL Amsterdam, or the legendary LOVEPARADE in the 90’s in Germany (Berlin)

Which other countries have you played?
There are many countries I played, here are some of them:
Australia, Austria, Scotland, England, Denmark, Norway, Finland, France, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Netherlands, Russia, Japan…

What was the first event you ever played?
The first event was a private party with more than 600 guests.

What’s the best event you’ve ever played?
There are some best events I ever played… for example:
LOVEPARADE in the early 90’s Germany Berlin, SUBLIME HOME Australia Sydney, VELFARRE Japan Tokio, DEFQON 1 Netherlands Almere Beach/Amsterdam, EVOLUTION NIGHTCLUB England Cardiff, THE ARCHES Scotland Glasgow, DANCE PLANET Festival Russia St. Petersburg, OXA Switzerland Zürich, XSTATIC Festival Denmark Middelfart, LE SPIRIT France Wolschheim

What was your first record you bought?
hmmm, I’m not sure… I think one of the first records as a maxi single was TRANS X “LIVING ON VIDEO” in 1983.

Out of all the tunes you have, which one does the business every time?
I think APOLLO “DANCE” and MEGARA VS DJ LEE “HOLD YOU HANDS UP HIGH” do the business every time.

What's your favourite tune of all time, the ultimate classic?
BINARY FINARY “1999” in 2 legendary remixes by KAY CEE and JAM X & DE LEON.

And when all the partying is over, how do you like to relax?
At my home inside and outside of my house, I listen to chill out music.

How is the scene in your eyes at the moment?
Here in Germany the last years the trance- & hardtrance scene shrinks, because electro and house has grown up. One more reason of becoming a smaller crowd, is the fact that the music styles have split into many many new styles. 10 or 20 years earlier there werent so many styles.
But it is common that styles grow up and become more popular and more commercial. And months or years later they becomes less popular, and less commercial.

So we all can be sure that our trance & hardtrance scene will come back soon :o)

How big is your vinyl collection? What is your opinion on CDJ's? (the pros & cons)
I’m not sure how many vinyls I own… I think more than 40,000 vinyls.
In the early time of cd I dissed them and only played vinyls. But after a certain time I played more and more cd. First only my own latest productions and remixes, and later all tracks from my playlist. Because I can play them earlier. And some tracks doesn’t came out on vinyl.
But I like to handle vinyl much more than cds.

The funniest thing that ever happened at an event?
It was on a very big rave called DANCE PLANET in Russia St. Petersburg with more than 24.000 raver. Beside me there played many other dj’s like TIESTO, KLUBBHEADS, PULSEDRIVER, G-SPOTT, YVES DERUYTER and many more.
When PULSEDRIVER starts his set, he was standing on the big stage and pull down his jeans and was standing only in white boxer shorts with red hearts on it. This was awesome and we all were laughing so much, it was too funny for words :o)

Other DJs you rate?
I met many friendly and good dj’s in my life… more than 100 big names.
COSMIC GATE, TIESTO, YVES DERUYTER, DAVE 202, DJ SCOT, DJ SHOG… PULSEDRIVER for example is a really nice and funny guy! He’s played everywhere. We both played many raves, and every time when we meet us he always has new funny stories :o)

Who is/are your biggest musical influences in the world of music & why?
There are many musical influences for me and my studio partner Nils van der Karsten. We know music of every style, because we love music in almost every styles. Music is so full of feelings and energy. Imagine a movie without music… it would be rubbish.

What are your feelings on the MC's?
On big raves MC’s are sometimes important to kick the crowd on a higher level.
But they shouldnt speak too much and have to know when the time has come for some MC shouts.

What do you do outside of the dance music scene?
I’m work some hours a day in an advertising agency, where I did my education in the beginning of the 90’s.

What advice would you give to up and coming DJs/Mc's/Promoters?
They have to work hard to find their own style, to become a successful and well known DJ/MC/Promoter.

If you could stage an event anywhere, where would you choose?
I would like to stage an event on a big round-the-world cruise… every day and night :o)

How do you see the scene 5 years from now?
I think that the scene the next years will come back to the peak of the 90’s.

If you had a time machine what year would you go back to and why?
There are some periods I would like to go back. For example the decade of the dinosaurs, or the decade of the cowboys and Indians in the USA.

Any shouts you would like to make?
Trance will never die.
Don’t drink and drive.
Always be yourself.

Whatever happened to the fine art of proper interviews? All we seem to get are these zero-substance Q&A bull ones.

Perhaps so, but I didn't mean this one alone - every single interview I've read lately has been like this.

I wish I could see Tiesto playing next to Klubbheads and Pulsedriver. Awesome line-up. :stongue:

Exactly my thoughts, just want to add Yves with The Rebel, Sexy Animals and To The Rhythm (and not Calling Earth).

I still have a track Megara played at Defqon1 2006 somewhere which I'm looking for, but don't know its name. Time to upload it:)
