Review: Steve Lawler at Circa (pg. 4)

Party of the year!!!! LOL... well technically it is so far. ;)

Spent most of the time in the main room; never ventured upstairs at all. I felt it was more enjoyable this way for me since finding friends wasn't too much of a challenge. The sound at the front was a bit too loud, but we camped out on a good spot at the back and jammed until the lawlerskates had no more wheels.. which then resulted into electric sliding.

In brief, the music was excellent. Jeff Button played one of his best sets I've heard to date, with his delicious deep inside sex music. The crowd couldn't get into it enough sadly, but when he dropped tune of the night, a Junior Boys track I think (Id Jeff?), he had the floor eating it up, crumbs and all. ;)

I actually enjoyed the first hour of Nevio. He dropped some older fluffy progressive house tracks, still incorporating a bit of a groove from where Jeff left off. He didn't play a track more than once too. Unfortunately the flow of his set went the wrong direction after an hour when he started dropping borderline trance. Lawler should have came on at that point, but the bitterness in my mouth wasn't that bad when he finally came on.

Lawler didn't blow me away, but I enjoyed his set more than any of his Guv skybar sets (minus 2005.) Big room Lawler sound fits him better I think. There was a lack of tribal influence, but he did drop a handful of these. The Circa Lawler was a good mixture of 2009 and 2007 Lawler which I really enjoyed. There were some moments of disbelief.. I don't know where this guy hides his magic tunes. Soooo good! I did find that some of his track selection were tunes you'd hear at CZ regularly, but as a whole it was not even on the same level. I find CZ sets banging and straight to the point, and Lawler was definately telling a story of sorts... I'm pretty sure it was the soundtrack to our movie, The Prehistoric Sessions: 2010. I look forward to hiring Lawler for future presentations ;)
It was really unfortunate that he couldn't play longer, but we wanted to leave at 5 roughly anyway for the post-sessions.

This party made one of my top 3 parties at Circa.. it's a shame this place is going to shambles (and I don't mean it in a good way), cause I still think this venue has potential with parties like this one.

i had a great night at circa overall, not much to complain about other than nevio's oddly placed set :wtf:

the crowd was great (way better than guv crowd), lighting was minimal but perfectly adequate for the type of party being thrown & dark vibe to be emitted. i agree with others where the lights were ing ridiculous at circa in the past, total seizure fest!! sound in the back was perfect (up front was not enjoyable)

buttons last 45 min was absolutely amazing, i was super impressed and dont think i've seen him tear it up that bad, ever! way to go jeff :)

honestly someone should've kidnpped nevio, and let button play till lawler came on!!

i have been really bored of lawler's skybar sets and wanted to hear his darker side in a club/big room atmosphere which is what i got...lacking a bit of tribal overall IMO (especially considering the robust amount in his recent sets!!) but beggers cant be choosers. first few hours he had me grooving to his minimal and tech but then later on he played a consistent blend of dark trippy house tracks, loco:crazy: tech and tribal sprinkled throughout from time to time.

i was expecting a bit more from lawler but maybe that's because i had quite high expectations from his review at TiL (still bugging myself for missing this!!) but i was still pleased musically and had a fantastic time bringing in the new years with friends and hotel shenanigans afterwards!

8/10

I REALLY REALLY wish I went to this now.... I didn't think I could handle it after zone and TiL but when I got home I realized this wasn't the case hahaha.

I haven't seen Circa before and would have liked to :( Matt you said at TiL that you had gotten me on the list, I really should have taken you up on that offer, thanks buddy :D

It was pretty hard to get into the groove after that "whatever it was" from Nevio and Lawler being late. Only managed to catch a couple of hours of Lawler's set and liked it. Wish I had the energy to stay longer. It was good to meet you Brian, I think the Braveheart tune made it worth the drive from Detroit, LOL.

I remember Circa having way more lighting and decor? WTF...Is it going under?

First time at circa...wasn't so bad (I was told that it wasn't as busy as circa usually gets, so that was kinda nice).

Another nice thing was the crowd...really wasn't as bad as I was told the usual circa crowd is like. I liked the vibe, it seemed like everyone was there to dance and hear some tunes but I have to say that I didn't go around the club and only stayed in the mainroom on the dance floor (where normally people are dancing lol)

good night overall...
lawler's set was waaaay better than his usual skybar stuff

about nevio: I mean I'm into trance and love it and contrary to what i've read in other reviews I have to say that his set wouldn't be a good starter for a great trance party AT ALL lol it was just simply random. I'm not complaining though cuz I was simply being random myself by even showing up at circa :)

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND PARTY ON

Thinking back to yesterday, I actually kind of enjoyed the feeling of minor lighting in a very dark club. It gives that massive space some feeling of intimacy, and removes the sense of big flashy circus. Something along the lines of Footwork's near sensory deprivation decor (though more so).

On first glance, however, it was kind of sad to see a previously astonishing facility hollowed out into the shell of a club that remains.

Right, I hadn't thought of the fact that some of the lighting may have been repossessed and stuff. But come on, even Footwork has a laser!

Poor lighting I can deal with anyway, it's the douchebags, the constant feeling of being forced down a hallway (unless you're in a ty area where the sound sucks), and the potential for a glass bottle to land on my head from above that really tick me off. Invest in some plastic/paper cups for 's sake!

does anyone know what that remix of sinnerman was?

^ I think the NoiDoi one. The Luciano and Felix da Housecat ones have too many vocals.

I felt re-energized when that came on shortly after 4.
