Why the hell is Charlotte half the size of Atlanta yet getting all the good dj's??? (pg. 2)

Also look at your booking fees for big name trance djs vs big name house djs or techno djs or dubstep djs.

Maybe someone should tell the Tiestos and PVDs that such an inflation of their "artform" makes them look like s.

Rarely?

No offense but you have a very dismal outlook on dance music my friend

Like I said, it's all about money and not just for promoters, but patrons and djs too. Don't blame promoters for not booking a trance dj over a house or dubstep or hiphop dj. The customer, most often, will pay less and the promoter doesn't have more money tied up in event to potentially lose. Why would I book a $10k dj when I could book a $1k dj and get the same amount of people out (save tiesto)?

Also, try lunarmagazine.com or 404audio.com for more atlanta event listings.

Why don't you bring those djs yourself :)

Exactly, if someone is complaining then fork out your own money and make it happen. Literally your scene is what you help make it, whether you bring DJs with your own money or support your local promoter with help

I'm not saying that there aren't talented DJ's in Charlotte; however, I would like to point out that every weekend, there are a plethora of clubs/lounges/bars/misc. venues in Atlanta featuring good local house/techno/dubstep/etc. DJ's. No, you won't find locals spinning trance, but that goes for most cities in the US.

This.

If you look past mainstream trance, Atlanta gets a helluva lot more talent than Charlotte...even though we've been in a rut recently. Maybe its time to diversify yourself.

Everyone responded just like I predicted. "Bring them yourself," " Diversify yourself," etc. I'm sorry I expect the promoters to diversify too.I thought about it and Inferno just brings the underground dub/ house djs and Liquified just brings the huge money makers for the most part. We need an in between person. Inferno, you proved my point. That whole list of people you listed, I and a lot of other people have never heard of. Plus, you don't seem very diverse either. Why don't you bring some trance?

I never once mentioned big name trance djs. There are a ton of names that only true EDM fans will recognize that I would love to see. I mean, off the top of my head, I remember Dash Berlin being mentioned. Or even Andy Moor. Really, how expensive could either of those people be? And you can't say people won't come out for trance. I've seen Above and Beyond play in a packed house along with Markus, ATB, and Ferry. Not to mention the sold out Tiesto and Armin shows. Seriously dude, can you honestly tell me that Pheek made a killing?

You know, the metal promoters in town always brings the best talent here. Whoever promotes in that scene knows how to do it. I've seen big bands playing at the Masquerade in front of a crowd of 30 people before, yet those same bands still come. Yet, no one will bring djs here unless they can sell it out. Maybe the EDM scene is just messed up. It seems to be more about the money than making the fans happy.

What answers were you looking for, since everyone responded so typically?

I don't do this to make money, but other people rely on show promotion to make a living. In an ideal world, money is irrelevant and music is free.

If you really have passion about the music, then do something about it.

Oh and we had just under 200 people pay for Pheek and Simple and the crowd loved the show. Just in case you weren't aware, Pheek has been making dance music professionally since the 80s and runs a very popular label with vinyl, digital and net releases :) a few months before Atlanta he headlined to a crowd of 4k in Argentina.

I brought him with very little money and made it work because I knew nobody else would.

Have sympathy for some of your promoters.

My point of the "unheard of" dj list was to show that Atlanta got lots of new, great talent in 09. Maybe you haven't heard of them, but check sites like RA or XLR8R and plug in names.

No offense to Charlotte, but I haven't seen very many interesting djs advertised as coming...

These topics are getting annoying. On the one hand, you have people who like music that the DJs being brought into Atlanta don't play. On the other hand you have the people who do like that kind of music.

The people who don't like it want to hear more of their music, not compromise and listen to music they think sucks. You can list 2,000 "good" DJs that play in Atlanta. It doesn't matter. We don't like the music they play. We're glad you all like it. Stop telling us to broaden our tastes. Dub step, drum n' bass, house, minimal, psy, etc. -- they don't work for me. I'll go to one of those shows occasionally to mix up, sure. But it's not my music. Stop telling me I should like these DJs. For the same reasons you don't like my trance DJs, are the same reasons I don't like your "unknown but good" DJs. They play different music than what we want to listen to.

Can we stop making these threads please? Seems like there's a new one of these threads every other month. The promoters don't care. They're looking at this whole thing from the business point of view, as they should be. The house/psy/dnb/dubstep/minimal djs are cheaper and more profitable for them.

If you can't make the 3.5-4 hour drive to Charlotte to see Gareth Emery or Andy Moor - then you obviously don't want to see them that badly. Sorry if you don't agree with me, but it's the truth. You have two options...go travel a bit (It's really ing easy by the way, it's literally all interstate driving...) or get the money together yourself, rent a venue, and contact these DJs' agents/marketing people/whatever.

Nobody is telling you to like certain djs, and I'm certainly not telling you to broaden your tastes. It's frustrating to see our edm slammed for not getting good djs when really you just want to see nothing but peak-hour trance, which is fine. I liked trance a bit, too, in the 90s when electronic music was new to me.

I agree...threads are old. There are two threads about Atlanta's scene at the top of this page. This isn't NYC, so we aren't going to have vibrant scenes for every genre. Can't please everyone. I know if I were to move away, it wouldn't be to a smaller, more pigeon-holed town.

Oh and the comments about hip hop...yes Atlanta is a huge hip hop town. In case you haven't noticed, a lot of black musicians get their start in this town. Maybe Tiesto will find it inspiring enough and will record with 3 6 mafia here in an Atlanta studio ;)

Just something I am noticing from the subjects of the Charlotte events: Friday and 18+. Its hard to find a venue in Atlanta that can do that. Also, how late can Charlotte go? Its been a while since I have been up there (its been a blast everytime though).

Eh...it definitely sounds like you are. Everytime this type of thread comes up...people like me get told to check out the DJs' websites you and other promoters are bringing in, etc. I check out a lot of these "random" DJs myspaces and what not. I'll admit, I do not check them all, and who knows...maybe a few DJs I would of otherwise liked slipped through my radar. But for the most part...the DJs being brought in just don't appeal to us. And it seems like everytime it gets mention, we get told to broaden our tastes and diversify to other genres.

inferno
Thread title eludes to Atlanta getting no "good djs" as does every other thread complaining

Simply stating that there have been plenty of good djs who have rolled through in last year.

Music is subjective.

The Forum now has a late night permit...for example, when David Guetta was here, the club didn't close until 3:45ish...
