It's bad because we're in an age where we're trying to get ppl to decrease, or more over, eliminate smoking completely.

and its time for that age to end. Lets allow people to decide for themselves instead of government social engineering.

Taxing weed at 50 bucks an ounce wont do anything though. People will still grow it illegally. Look for native weed to get big like cigs are now.

Im all for legalization of weed and sensible taxation. Same with hookers. People do this anyways. Why not clean it up and make money off it?

I truly admire California's progressive stance on marijuana.

While it may be lost under the guise of being progressive, don't forget that California is on the cusp of bankruptcy and are looking desperately for ways to pay off debts... this looks like one of those ways.

Regardless, this is something that should have been done a loooong time ago.

If they "legalize" in a single state though, and it is not agreed and reciprocated at the Federal level... and in this case Marijuana is on Schedule 1 of their CSA... does this really mean anything?

Couldn't people get nailed by DEA regardless of whether or not the state level considers it legal/illegal?

i think technically yes. But i think the people behind this bill are counting on it to be a catalyst for Obama to soften up the federal position. Id be very surprised if he did though. All Obama knows how to do up to this point is spend China's money.

End the age of what? Getting ppl to stop smoking? Yes we have the right to smoke if we wish, but no gives ME the right to refuse my taxes going towards that 50 or $100,000 (not sure if that is the actual amount) cancer therapy per smoker because he/she has no ing brains and chose to start smoking. That's just my two cents.

they always to fail to mention that ALCOHOL IS A DRUG but no one seems to have a problem with that being legal anymore

Let's not forget nicotine....

As states like Cali, Oregon, Wyoming move twoards full legalization (not that I think it will officially happen for a while) its baffling to see the laws in Canada regress.

And Prometheus don't confuse the effects of smoking cigarettes and weed - totally different long term effects.

And Jayx1 I'm in full agreement :). We need move away from punishing people for what they do to themselves and allow us the freedom to choose - How very "left wing" of you :p

ahhhh theres a slippery slope.. So you think that you should have the right to control smokers because it costs you tax money?

OK, well drinking, unmarried sex, sports injuries, etc etc are all preventable health problems that smokers could argue that they shouldnt have to pay for.

As ive always said, i support public medicine until it is used as a crutch to support social engineering. We either fund EVERYONE and accept their lifestyles, or we DONT.

No picking and choosing based on prejudices.

ive always been libertarian. In fact one can argue that being a Libertarian is very right wing as it argues that the government should take a hands off approach to rights and freedoms. Traditionally the left wing has been all about control and micromanagement.

But as i stand i am pro conservative business/economics and pro liberal rights and freedoms.

Note the liberal with a small L as opposed to the Liberal party which is not liberal when it comes to rights and freedoms in the least.
