My fiancée bought it for me as a present. Actually, I have to gaily admit that I cherish it more for the sentimental value (and how heartbroken she'd be if I told her it died) than for the files in it =/ |
I doubt buffalo makes the drive. They are a networking company, so they probably make the network/interface card that connects the drive. The hard drive is made by one of the few makers (western digital, maxtor, etc.) Buffalo is actually a good name. |

Any idea of what may be going on? Here's an error message utorrent gave me, and the explanation on the FAQ:| quote: | 13. I get "Error: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)" and my torrent halts.
This is not a µTorrent error, but instead an error reported by your hard drive. It means that your HDD was unable to read or write the data because the sectors are faulty or starting to die, which may be a sign of future disk corruption. Running chkdsk might help, but you may need stronger recovery tools (such as SpinRite). |
I'm cleaning it up before running scandisk again because it seems to improve the performance a bit. What other software would you recommend? |

| Looks like time for a new drive to me lira. Also, scandisk really isn’t all that useful. The only sure fire way to get things minty-new is a format. |

| So be it (a format). It is just 4-months-old, though, and I'm probably doing an international trip next month, so I can't really afford a new one right now :p |

Is it a new drive? Because these types of problems will surface if its defective with in the first week after the purchase.
Are you getting errors when writing files to it from windows or only when using torrent? You can scan the drive for error using windows and reformat it. If that still doesn't work you need to contact the manufacture. They usually have a utility that does a low level scan that determines if it is defective.
How is the drive connected? |

| Yeah, it's rather new. And, no, only have these problems using torrent... though it's a bit rebellious now, and I'm having some trouble transferring the files from it to my laptop. |

| Is the drive power by the usb port or does it get power from an outlet? Its not uncommon that laptops don't supply enough power to self powered usb drives, resulting in errors when copying files. |

From an outlet... so I guess this is bad news indeed :p |

You bunch of helmets.
Buffalo is one of the leading brands in EXTERNAL storage devices, they are particularly well known for their NAS drives. They are massively well known!
They use Western Digital or Seagate drives to put within their own housings. They do not manufacture their own disks, just like Dell, HP and Acer etc don't manufacture their own.
Buy with confidence, Buffalo is a rock solid storage solution provider. |

Good call. It seems to be working out great for Lira. I think I'll go and buy one right now :p |
