It honestly scares me when people say like that. What if the guy starts having doubts? Is he going to gun down people at campus?

don't forget Fallwell's response to 9-11..

Oh, Lira:

The teacher said that wasn't true, because the kid wouldn't kill his own mother if there were no consequences in life and no afterlife. The kid said if there were no consequences he would, if it would help him get ahead.

I know this is a troll, but the scary thing is a lot of people think this way.

I know, there are a few I'm rather fond of, but the shear stupidity of so many of them makes me cry. Someone in my ethics class today say that if god didn't exist and there were no legal ramifications of what he did he would go ape and kill everybody to get his way and be rich. I'm glad he just told everyone that the only reason he doesn't is because he doesn't want to go to hell, though. Bloody moron..

you should have told him that altruism predates religion. when we were all neanderthals roaming the wild unknown, those with altruistic qualities lived in cooperative groups and their women and children survived long enough to reproduce living in the relative safety of their like-minded peers while the greedy, ape homicidal maniac was eaten by sabertooth tigers.

Text Haiti to 9099 to donate $10 to red cross int'l response fund.

I wasn't talking about your beliefs earlier but, now that you drew my attention to what you're saying, I'm curious: Would you say anything at all to justify the fact that God both allowed this to happen and is now with those suffering and grieving?

Hal asked me why God smote the Haitians; my belief is that God didn't smite anyone; rather, God is digging people out of the rubble, tending to the wounded, loading supplies on an airplane, comforting the dieing and mourners, etc. I don't believe that God acts directly; rather, inspires others to act. In short, I do not believe in divine intervention other then a few exceptional acts of revalation; only divine inspiration.

Interesting arugument except for two rather large flaws... 1) the Neanderthals had a reasonably well developed religion, 2) living in cooperative groups in order to acheive a measure of safety from preditorial animals is more a survival instinct then altruism, no?

BTW, all evidence suggests we are not decendants of Neanderthals, as it seems that Homo Sapiens Sapiens and Homo Sapien Neanderthals did not interbread or intermix.

Pat Robertson is about as misguided (or misguiding) as they come.

I want to hear the Westborough Baptist Church's views on this.

The point still stands though because altruism predates culture, and even the genus homo. And yes, you could call it an instinct, but I don't see the problem with that. :conf:
