Evidence does suggest that Neanderthals and Sapiens did live in the same area, now Great Britain, at the same time. Most recent studies do suggest that we are not decendants but I wouldn't fully exclude that some Sapiens didn't get freaky with the Neanderthals.... I would.

She begs to differ:

The whole series is worth watching, by the way, though the last bit about South America did bother me a bit. She was looking at some Brazilians as if we were the final destination and whatnot, but it's blatantly obvious that the editor forgot to mention that there's very little of the native population here today - the reason why so many of us look European/African is because not many generations ago, our ancestors lived in these continents! :p

Well, Pat Robertson has this all figured out. Haiti is cursed because they worship the devil!

BTW, all evidence suggests we are not decendants of Neanderthals, as it seems that Homo Sapiens Sapiens and Homo Sapien Neanderthals did not interbread or intermix.

homo erectus which existed 2 million years ago behaved in the same manner. maybe they were religious too, but religious in their context probably meant superstitious about natural phenomena such as the sunrise and sunset. i highly doubt that if they were religious, that meant they had a morality that was explicitly mandated by a god.

so my point stands. to say that religion gave us morality is to say that people are naturally savage creatures with no intrinsic moral compass. it implies that religion is responsible for civilized social interaction. it assumes that it is impossible for people to coexist with each other without a religious guideline. i wonder how it is then that atheists refrain from raping everyone they can't attract, murdering everyone they can't get along with and stealing from everyone that has something they can't have? religion exists because not every person has the mental facilities to empathize with others or deal with their own mortality. those people need their religion to cope with such shortcomings.
