it's called shock jocking. they say offensive, outrageous, hateful stuff to get other people to notice them. other people in the media and other people like you. the majority of his audience is people who think he's disgusting, but it doesn't matter. the fact that you are his audience makes him money. it doesn't matter if what he says is self-deprecating and blatantly false. the mere fact that it causes you to tell others about him makes him relevant in the media. is anyone talking about charlie rose or jim lehrer? nobody even knows who they are. everyone knows ann coulter and glenn beck though...

i can't, a lot of people can. glenn beck is a millionaire and all he does is say stupid in front of a camera for an hour every day. there are millions of people who would love to do that for a living.
