West Coast TA Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort

I searched the West Coast TA forum for the word "Haiti" and no results were returned, so I thought that with this thread, we could come together and help out. Originally, I thought it would be great to have a tip jar at the clubs and people could throw in their change, but that would take a lot of effort and someone who's probably already very busy would have to deal with where to send the money, etc.

I believe it was Bill Clinton, who upon visiting Haiti after the earthquake said (paraphrased)...Imagine that you have lost everything, and are wandering the streets in the dark with nowhere to go, stepping over bodies, some dead, others alive. That's what the people of Haiti are going through now, they need our help.

Here are a couple of organizations who operate with very little overhead and can do a great deal to help out those in need:

American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund

Or, send a $10 Donation to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief fund by Texting ‘Haiti’ to 90999 on your cell phone

source: http://www.redcross.org/portal/site...00089f0870aRCRD

I have read that it may take 30-60 days for contributions to be delivered this way, as the phone company charges $10 to your bill, waits for payment and then pays the donations to the Red Cross. It is a quick and easy way to donate, however, and 100% of the $10 donated will go to the Haiti relief fund (source: http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...or_Haiti_relief). With a disaster of this magnitude, help will still be needed in 60 days, plus funds will also go to rebuilding housing, etc.

Doctors Without Borders

Here are also some other organizations and ways to donate:

Text to help Haiti (There's a graph showing ways to text many relief organizations, and whether SMS fees apply or are waived by each of the major carriers)

Clinton Foundation

International Rescue Committee

Oxfam America

Unicef

Light a virtual candle on Facebook and $5 will be donated to the Unicef's Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund

If you know of any other good organizations, please post them here. If you donate, or have already donated something and would like to let others know that the West Coast TA's are helping out, please reply "I donated" (don't list the amount please, just donate what's in your heart).

I know the economy is tough, but for the price of a drink at a club we can probably get a considerable amount of medical supplies, food and water to those in need. If you can't afford to donate anything, please show that West Coast TA's care by letting those devastated by this natural disaster know that we are thinking of them, and you'll also help by keeping this thread active. Together, the West Coast's largest EDM community can make a difference! :)

I just saw on the news that one of the search & rescue teams today found a woman in her 70's still alive who was trapped under the rubble for a week. She had a broken femur and pelvis, but there was no place for them to take her for adequate medical care. Without it, she may still die.

Imagine being trapped and rescued after a week, only to find out that there's no medical care available! Please help out if you can, the last I heard, over $8 million was raised just by people who texted $10 each on their cell phones. I also read that it will take $350 million just to get Haiti on a survival plan for 6 months, and that 55% of the population made under $1USD per day there last year. $5 or $10 will go a long way, if you haven't donated anything yet, please consider give up a few coffees at Starbucks or something and join us in saving our friends' lives.

I'm a little saddened that the Health & Fitness thread has three times as many page views as this thread...the word apathy comes to mind, but I hope I'm wrong! :nervous:

If you have donated to this cause, your generosity is already making a difference. There's still a long way to go, but without those who care and who have helped out, the situation would be even more dire.

Awesome! I got a great email from Matt Cerf too:

'Today I woke up and noticed I had a roof over my head.

So many people in the world are not as fortunate.

The earthquake that hit Haiti a few days ago killed, they say, up to 200,000 people, and I cannot imagine how many are needing help right now.

There are a lot of ways to help, but 1 way I recommend is to go to Partners In Health's website, and read how you can help, and at least donate some money.

Partners in Health | Stand with Haiti

You probably spend over 20$ last night, at a club or a restaurant, so please make a donation, even as small as 10$...

Thanks in advance!

Best,

Matt Cerf"

Nothing to worry about - the Red Cross already has plenty of money in the bank. They pay the expenses up front with the knowledge that it will be paid back by the phone companies after they've charged the customer.

I donated 3 pairs of almost new shoes to soles4souls at my school last week.

This is the only way that 100% of my donation will make it all the way there

I also dropped 40 bucks at church donation drive during the mass i went to with my grandma. But i am sure not all that will make it there...
