If that's the case (and despite me not seeing the Hip as Canadian culture departing), I can't name any defining artists. (Probably the FOB in me)

Perhaps the best way to tackle this is by answering the secondary question of if someone said play me some Canadian music (not music that typifies a global style), you would play ______ and say "that's Canadian music to me".
So then who would you play in that scenario?

any one of the artists I mentioned throughout this thread. In most cases the person will go "Wha??? I didn't know he/she/they were canadian...awesome"
and yes I was one of those with such a response.

Maybe I missed it, but has no one said Matthew Good, formerly of the Matthew Good Band? They were big in the late 90's and early 2000's (remember the song Apparitions?) but perhaps not so much after the breakup. However, Matt Good still has a huge Canadian following and consistently reaches the top of the charts with his albums.
Now if we're going for general Canadiana here, I think the Hip have it nailed down. And Gord Downie is probably the quirkiest front man I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.

matt good's latest solo album is titled "Vancouver"... doesn't get much more overtly canadian than that. what i've heard of it is not his best work.
i give him credit for staying small and indie in the name of being true in his art.
