What non-EDM artists do you listen to?

It seems like everybody here (except me) keeps pretty up to date on the latest EDM artists and it seems that those are obviously highly influential to your musical output. So, I'm just curious to know what non-EDM artists you guys listen to. Do you find that the non-EDM stuff directly influences your EDM tracks?
For me, I grew up listening to a lot of 80s punk/new wave/post-punk bands and late 80s/early 90s alt-rock particularly the jangly guitar rock, and goth. I also listened to a LOT of early industrial music (e.g., Front Line Assembly, Front 242, Skinny Puppy, etc.). These were probably the most influential styles for me overall. But, in recent years, I listen to a lot more laid-back stuff when not listening to EDM. Delerium is quite possibly my favorite band of all time and influences my non-EDM tracks a lot - other Delerium fans have pointed that out to me - and they also influence my EDM tracks. I'm also a huge fan of the Swiss band Lunik, who seem to be almost unknown outside of Switzerland, or that general region of Europe. |

Well, i come from a rock background. i used to play drums in metal bands at first then progressive rock.
My single biggest non-EDM influence and favorite band of all time is Rush. I can go on and on about them and their genius, but I won't bore anyone here with that discussion. I agree with you on Delerium, but i really only liked Semantic Spaces. Everything before and after that was a bit "meh" for me, but SS was a huge favorite of mine. So Ethereal. I lost my CD, and I can't seem to find it for sale anywhere. I was also a big fan of Enigma back when they were "new", I always liked the electronic bands that were not necessarily dance.
Other than that I listen/listened to a lot of what I call "underground" or "smart" pop stuff. Stuff that's got a lot of pop elements but isn't quite as cheesy as the typical pop stuff (which I hate). Early Garbage was good, I'm a big fan of Plumb, she's amazing...Ivy, Aurora, etc. The first Evanescence album has some really good deep cuts on it, but they folded after the guitarist left. There is a dutch band called Within Temptation that's this kind of smart, symphony metal that has a really good singer, who worked with AVB on a track not long ago. Very complex, prog rock type stuff. Alot of these artists are bands at heart but they use a lot of electronic "elements".
I tend to like bands when they are in a certain phase. It seems like every artist I like is only good for maybe two or three albums at best. Then they change so much that they loose the elements that made me like them in the first place. It's disappointing, but I understand the need to grow as a band and not remain stagnant. Rush is really the only band who i have stuck with through their different "phases" throughout the years. I stuck with them up until Couterparts, then I was unhappy with their new "rock" direction. The 80's phase was still my favorite of them all (Signals through Presto).
Still, 99% of what I listen to these days is EDM. My production partner listens to very little EDM, so it makes for a good team when producing because he is always bring fresh approaches to out work. I think its good to have outside influences. |

I find myself drifting away from EDM these days. I've recently been listening to a lot of artists which I admired growing up. People like:
Enya
Bjork
Buckethead
Joel Mcneeley
I'm also very fond of film/game composers like Yoko Shimomura, Koji Kondo, Joe Hisaishi, James Horner etc.
The Beach Boys are also a personal favourite of mine :D |

I actually listen to a lot of rock and folk, I really don't listen to much EDM... I listen to a good bit of electronic music but it's stuff like Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher.. I've got a soft spot for the Cafe del Mar series too, there's some amazing chillout stuff on there.
Muse is my favorite band atm, and pretty much everything else I listen to falls under indie rock, folk or post rock. I really don't casually listen to any trance unless I'm just poking around on Youtube, so it's kinda odd that I fell into producing it, haha.. but I think that's a better way of doing things than immersing yourself in nothing but the genre you make. |

I like all types of music, everything maybe except for country.
Last year I discovered piano jazz, which is great ;)
Before EDM I was heavy into Alternative Rock, Rock and stuff, Rap/Hip-Hop, RnB, and now I'm into oldies, 80's and Piano Jazz. |

kinda the opposite. I listen to as much orchestral stuff as I can. I really love EDM but I find it so hard to find good music and it is frustrating. I hate listening to mixes but I just don't have time to search out the gems. I sometimes find a few artists I really enjoy. The last few have been Wolfgang Gartner and Sebastian (ed banger). Usually listen to that stuff for production because I find what EDM lacks in music more than makes up for it in production.
It used to be different about 10 years ago. Was a dj so I was constantly buying records searching for the latest sound. I got bored and decided to attack classical music and learn everything there is to know and the well just keeps on getting deeper. There is so much great music that makes you feel completely void of talent. I love it because you can spend so much time on just one piece to really understand it. I've spent a year analysing Brahms Symphonies. THere are only 4 of them but there is just so much to grasp that it just makes you feel so damn inadequate.
I also spend about 1 hour a day playing guitar which is usually 70s funk so Listen to alot of funk and early black disco.
75% is classical for studying
5% is current movie score trends because they tend to change very fast.
5% is EDM
7 % is funk disco and jazz
3 % is current pop despite how bad it is
5 % is metal or punk for when I go to the gym.
it always changes tho. I spent one year studying big band jazz and the likes of duke ellington and stuff. I suppose i know less and less about more and more. |

Wow - interesting responses so far. I always sorta felt like I was the only guy here who isn't a total trance-head. I guess not!
One other band that I've listened to a lot over the past decade has been VNV Nation. Technically, some of their stuff could be classified as borderline EDM, but it's more like a mix of industrial, darkwave, with some trance elements thrown in. Also a big fan of other darkwave bands like Clan of Xymox and the Cruxshadows - all these bands use quite a bit of synthesizers in their music. |

Artists seem too numerous so I'll categorize, apart from notables, instead.
Jazz (Mingus, Monk, Coltrane, Ellington + Similar)
Classical (I typically avoid American composers apart from Gershwin - who also may be categorized as jazz)
Rock (Rush, Yes, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix and Van Halen are most notable for my tastes in this category but I do appreciate a wide variety)
Hip Hop (Public Enemy - Dr. Dre, Beastie Boys, NWA, Wu-Tang)
Country (Prefer old, old stuff but also appreciate Garth and some new stuff, too.) |
