i do miss the old guv dj booth. Huge and spacious (with couches) and back then the music did most of the talking.
(well for me it still does) |

Agreed.. You were at work, did a great job and dont need to sell us your music by posing, smiling, gesturing, touching etc.
Aside from the terrible state of label whore djs who put out 2 hours of personal productions and all. I really detest the current 2-3 year trend of circus antics being churned out by these attention hungry laptop junkies. The bull that goes on in the booth is nothing but a circus act. Let the music do the talking. Every Dj is now selling a brand and a character. In a way, a lot of them act like professional wrestlers. The last thing i want to see is some Dj acting like jesus, puting their headphones in the air or creating some other retarted pose that serves no purpose but to evoke a reaction from the scenesters. Then you have this current trend of hand/finger hearts.. wtf? Is this a Miley Cyrus concert? Who wants to see a row of emotionally charged females up front anticipating when they will get their first/next chance at touching a Djs hand. Enough is enough, I would like to turn the clock back and put the booth back to where it belongs. |
Bravo. |

First of all I would like to say to everybody : Thank you for coming to the guv last saturday!
Just to let you know I had a great time playing again in this wonderfull club.
For those who thought I didn't enjoy myself: When I am playing i am so concentrated what to play and how to mix good, that my face shows something like I don't care at all. Well, that's the problem of my face and it will probably always be this way when I am playing. Sorry for that.
My conclusion of saturday : For me, one of the best nights in the guv adn I hope to be back soon! |
Dood I thought you had the best set of the night by far. |

I agree. And disagree.
Let the music do the talking, for sure! However, when you have hundreds and sometimes thousands of people looking in your direction, it's part of s dj's job to "entertain". Agreed, the pompus poses and acting like a clown is a little uncalled for, but people certainly do feed off the vibe a dj puts out by their actions as well. Dancing around, jumping around, showing an audience they are just as into the music as they are is KEY to a good performance as a DJ, and is intrical to how an audience will respond to the music.
Long gone are the days where the dj was some person in the corner who nobody cared to see. If you want it back that way, stay home and listen to your ipod in bed under your sheets. :p |

a dj provides sound. He is not an actor or a go go dancer. I dont go to see a dj jump around like an idiot. If anything im interested in the technical aspects of what hes doing to provide sound.
Want a dj to be a show monkey? then get him on the decks to do some scratching, or phasing, or cuts. But jumping around and pretending to be that guy who guides 747s into the airport gate is not my idea of a good show. |

I agree for the most part. Altho I thought Eddie Halliwell was pretty cool to watch on the decks last year so animated looked like he was really into the music. Fire it UP!!! |

Wow. Jaded much?
Do you just stand there and listen to the music, expressionless, and resist with all temptation to move your body? What's the point in going out? To talk with friends. Get a phone!
Imagine 1 person on the dancefloor (ie YOU) standing there as pictured above. Expressionless, motionless, lifeless. A DJ sees you, he's going to do the exact same thing. DJ unemotionally, motionless, lifeless.
Now, imagine 1 person on the dancefloor again (ie ME), dancing around, arms in the air, clapping, voicing my pleasure. A DJ sees me do that and he's going to do the exact same thing! Because he feeds off my vibe as well.
It's reciprical.
DJ's can show expression through their actions (dancing, clapping, cheering, singing along), just like listeners show expression through their actions (ie dancing, clapping, cheering, singing along).
Why is this so hard to accept? |

Exactly! It's about getting into the music and manipulating it as a DJ. Not just about being a DJ. |

I agree with Firechild and Ferg for the most part. It energizes the crowd, knowing that the DJ is having a great time as well.
Not that a DJ can't have a great time without showing it (which I was proved wrong about by Rank 1), but it's nice to see them get into it a little.

Sorry I got the wrong impression.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, and that most people enjoyed your performance ;)
You don't need to apologize for your face :D |

sure djs can do this... but should it be something used to judge whether or not their set was good? im not against djs having a good time. But there is a clear difference between being "in the groove" and being a show boater.
Lets compare say tiesto and carl cox. Carl cox def gets into the groove and has a good time. What does he do? He dances around while he mixes. But thats only at certain times. No fake poses, no BS. tiesto? Well he practically invented the showboating poses. Jesus poses, air traffic controller moves. IF A DJ NEEDS TO RELY ON THIS TO EXCITE A CROWD HE SHOULDNT BE A DJ
so to say dj such and such was crap and is only there for a paycheque because he happened to be concentrating on doing his job is ridiculous. If the guy plays a kick ass set, thats all that should matter. |

Haha Digweed.
Why shouldn't a dj dance, move around and interact with the crowd? It shows they're having fun and enjoying the party. |
