Since buying hardware synths is like crack, i was surfing the web, checking out demos, prices and reviews for my next purchase.
So far here are the candidates:
edit: im shying away from buying another synth, considering an eventide eclipse...
i hear people say an h8000 is amazing with synths, but thats a little out of my price range... |

Yeah I read your hardware thread, you seem to like that one quite a lot. Only problem is finding one...and if it breaks its a bitch to get repaired since its not produced anymore?

So far here are the candidates:
Virus TI2 desktop
- Access. Enough said.
Polyevolver
- Although im seeing mixed reviews, this synth intrigues me....if anyone has samples (good demos are hard to find) plz post em!
Blofeld + Mopho (good deal on novamusik for both)
-The more I look into the blofeld the more it looks awesome, would be cool sampling analog sounds and using them in the blofeld. Mopho looks fun too, simple but analog fatness is there so...
Right now I have the andromeda, virus C and microQ...
so getting the TI or blofeld might be redundant, in which case id probably sell the older one (unless its really different)
Thoughts? (ideally from people with actual experience with my candidates!)
edit: I could also wait for the stromberg lol |
Blofeld - underpowered, not very much different from Virus in terms of distinctive sound. Kinda weak. Especially since you already have MicroQ.
Anything DSI - EXTREMELY UNDERWHELMING. One of the biggest disapointments. Some love it - some hate it. I ended up dumping EVERY SINGLE synth ever made by Dave Smith that I owned. Including Prophet VS, Prophet 08, MEK, PEK and other dreck.
Virus Ti2 - own one now, love it but you may have some overlap with Virus C in your arsenal. MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT - Virus C sounds warmer than TI. I just re-listened to my old projects that were made with a C and I'm going to hunt one down. Like it or not but something about TI/TI2 is... cold and kinda rubs me a bit wrong way. don't get me wrong - it's a great synth but C and TI do sound different in some way and I feel that C sounds a bit more lush/warmer ... even more analog? :)
I would recommend Juno 60 or 106, perhaps even a Jupiter 6 (one can be had for about $1500 if you shop around) - terrific synth, will only appreciate in price. Also, Oberheim Matrix 1000 is a pretty cheap way to get some TERRIFIC analog sounds for under $300.
Nord Lead 3 - another great VA, albeit also in very close territory to Virus or Waldorf. It does have a distinct sound though. Nord Lead 1 would be another nord I'd strongly recommend. I sold mine and kinda regret it. I might have to hunt one down eventually. Be sure to buy one with PCMCIA expansion that adds 8 more voices, making it a 12 voice synth.
Here's an odd synth that will keep you occupied as much as andromeda would (and somewhat underrated / unknown) - Korg Z1. It's a VA but pretty monstrous one. I'm not a big fan of Korgs in general but this one is pretty tight.
Korg Mono/Poly or Polysix - both great analogs, although you gotta be careful when shopping for one, as some had battery leak problem that caused all kinds of issues.
What else. For really quirky and somewhat cool sound - see if you can track down an MFB synth - they have variety of synths, many are pretty cool and have really nice raw sound to them.
These are just some of the synths that come to mind. |
