FL Studio vs Reason
View this Thread in Original format

I have the Korg Triton Studio and I usually just produce, edit, record all on the keyboard itself (hence the Workstation name) I want to get a program for the computer. I'm stuck between FL Studio and Reason.....for trance, what would you suggest? Thanks

Both, or start off with FL then get Reason and use rewire.

If you want to use MIDI with the Triton, I'm afraid you'll have to forget Reason as it only has MIDI-in.

Ableton Live

I've used FL and besides the piano roll there is really no reason to get it. It's just too simple. You have to do everything with patterns and that was the absolutel primary reason I switched. I've never used Reason but the fact that you can only use the instruments it has is a negative. I'm sure it has some very nice instruments but what if you want something different? Then I think you have to buy refills of whatever they're called.

So I must recommend Ableton Live. It will do everything you need it to do efficiently and with no clutter. It is mean to work with only one monitor meaning you can run it on a laptop just as well as you could run it on a desktop. Plus, if you're looking to save money, Live Intro is only $100. There are, of course, limitations but for somebody who is new to using a DAW (I'm assuming by your post that that is the case) those limitations will be unnoticeable (except for maybe the limit on the instruments you can have).

So, though you asked about FL and Reason, I urge you to check out Ableton Live if you have not already. You may find that you like it better.

BTW
i can run more plug ins in Reaper then in FL and Ableton Live but i hate Reaper sidechain, Live and Reason sidechain sound good to me i have not try protools sidechain because my pc is to slow.
But i think i am going back to protools for mixing because Markus Schulz Mixs his songs in protools so he says! :D

Oh well, if he does it then it must be good

As someone who uses protools in a pro envnronment every waking day of my life, i can tell you without hesitation that midi is really not well implemented in PTHD.

Unless, your just bouncing down to all audio tracks from your composing/producing DAW, and importing to PT for the final mixdown, using PT is not oworth using for EDM.

Tracking, recording, editing, mixing = Yes (more so than other other system)

Midi arranging, composing = Big no.

LE is not worth using (32 track minimum) (or 16 stereo tracks) unless you buy the toolkits, but that works out more expensive than buying logic or cubase which give you unlimited track counts.

FL or reason? Neither personally. I know everyone whines "but it's how you use it blah blah blah" and Guetta made "cheesey cash monster feat. Ima burntoutninetiessinger" on it, but honestly, every serious producer graduates one day to a another DAW that can actually handle WAV's or has multiple processor support etc.

My advice is to go for either Cubase, Logic, Sonar or Reaper, depending on your preference.

I know, bit if flame bait there, but seriously speaking, nearly every person that I know who "made it" (had a major release, or got signed, or quit their day job becuase music was now paying the rent etc.) on FL or reason either switched to logic or cubase or sonar at some point.

In fairness ableton has a strong pro following but it pales in comparison to the number of professional composers and producers that are cubase or logic users.

An example is I remember everyone having such a boner over Joel (the Mau5) using FL for major releases and how they too felt some kind of validation for using FL and then the subsequent fallout when it was discovered he switched to logic.

Just saying that reason and FL have their place but in my experience, most people graduate (and that's how they describe it) to something else.

isnt it funny how most producers who make it, switch to logic. hmm. :D

anyways it can be done on pro tools just ask dinky.
