Sorry to hear this young man go. The young newcommers have less fear and push themselves beyond their limits to prove themselves, and unfortunately to their demise. He did look out of control on that last turn, and over-steered to get back down.

It was a one in a million type accident. All sled tracks have metal poles along the track at some point that are not padded.

This was his second crash this week. Maybe the rules on who should be competing need to change. He was not a medal threat and not even in the Top 50 in the world.

This is brutal but I think he should have had the chance to compete. There are a lot tier ways to die then doing something you love and he was more then aware of the risks involved with his sport. Also remember Ross Rebagliati I don't think he was ranked in the top 50 when he took olympic gold in down hill snowboarding. All said this is a really ty way for the Olympics to start, I feel bad for his friends n family who were probably really looking forward to watching him compete...:(

wow....speechless.

yeah, I'm in Van right now and it's almost like having a good friend overdose at a party you've been looking forward to for a long time, it has casted a bit of a pall over the festivities.

Some heads will roll, there was lots of criticism about the difficulty of the track before the accident even. I believe the Vancouver Sun ran an article on that before the fatal crash

I just saw the video and there is no amount of padding that couldve been installed on that pole to protect him from that crash...

There should have been a vertical barrier from the wall to the awning...

It's the exact same thing that wouldve saved Jeff Krosnof and the track marshall at the '96 Molson Indy...

Truly a tragic event but the luge is an EXTREMELY dangerous sport...

RIP Nodar...

are you serious??? have you ever seen winter olympic games before???
MikeyN
Wow, so I had only saw the headlines about this today, but the opening ceremonies really struck a nerve.

To know that Nodar was my age...it really hurts.

Really, why did he have to be taken today? Why could he have not had a chance? To make it to the olympic level requires so much training, hard work, dedication, commitment, courage and sacrifice, and he never got to show the world what he could achieve.

So many people die everyday, I don't why I feel such a connection to this one. Maybe the Olympics really do unify us on some kind of 'emotional' level, maybe it's just because he's my age. I don't know. But thinking about Nodar's death makes me feel so gutted.

My prayers and condolences tonight are with his family in mind. I hope that every athlete keeps him in mind over the next 16 days.

no offence. RIP guy, its sad.

but, why did he have to be taken away today?

um...i wanna ing LOL as hard as i can but i dont wanna.

OOOOH WHYYYYYYYY

one question??? would you be so ing melodramatic if it was...lets say Russian??? or Chinese???

MikeyN
Probably. I really don't see what difference his culture makes. He's still human, the guy was still my age, and who knows what he could have achieved if he were still alive. Culture doesn't change the fact that I think this is a tragic loss of life.
