why would you ever design a course with poles next to a place where someone is going 140+ km/h?
Obviously theres an element of danger when you're participating in the luge, but like you said....what a dumb place to have poles. |

In their defense, luge accidents don't usually involve the luger themselves flying out of the track. This was a first and I'm sure no one could have anticipated about that.
CTV just showed the footage of the accident, it was a hard impact. |

omg, most horrific accident i have ever seen!!!!!!!
The rely on cbc news was better quality and really showed how immense the crash was. I really think the luge course should have a clear plastic tube to keep the athletes inside (that or a wall to deflect them down the course) |

RIP
It was a one in a million type accident. All sled tracks have metal poles along the track at some point that are not padded.
This was his second crash this week. Maybe the rules on who should be competing need to change. He was not a medal threat and not even in the Top 50 in the world. |

Before people get too indignant about the course design, the video shows that the luger probably died on impact with the wall BEFORE being slingshotted into the pole.
Deaths on bobsled/luge tracks aren't all that uncommon, the luge run in St Moritz which is considered easy by today's bobsled/luge standards has had DOZENS of deaths over it's 100 year history.
Tough way to start the Games though. |
