Bottle service, bad attempts @ high fashion, more popped collars than Jersey.

What happened to balls to the wall fun and all the characters?

Bring back 1999-2004 dammit.

I'm with you 100% on this one.

Not sure what's worse. Coming back to the shock of the change or watching it happen live.

Ive commented manytimes but then digitwaat chimes in with the same get out of the past bull...

I try to avoid taking part in the "back in the day" discourse, but it is true that these days the retard contingent is definitely a lot larger and maybe even comprises a majority of the scene today. There are just way too many noobs that think because they downloaded the newest #1 tech-house track on Beatport, and because they follow DJs around like lost puppies, that they are part of a privileged haute-société, whose mandate it is to take every opportunity to show everyone how "connected" and "in-the-know" they are. There is a marked culture of vanity that exists in the scene today that did not exist before. Although the bottle service trend is not completely to blame, I definitely see a connection to the general one-upping and dick-sizing that plagues the scene today.

Another contributing factor is the popularization of techno. Although I love the genre myself, techno fans have always had an elitist chip on their shoulders, and I think that this has been adopted by the masses.

Personally, I just avoid these people and spend my time with those who don't participate in this backwards way of thinking, and who like to have a good time, instead of standing around watching to see if everyone notices how cool they are.

Now, everyone practice their minimal lip curls!

and house a few years ago as well.

Even the way people dress up and go to parties now....it's like walking into hipster world..

It's not just Techno. There are genre-whore/elitists for House/Trance/etc (and those have always been around). That said, one of the things I miss from the 'days of old' is when everyone was at a party and enjoyed the variety of music being played (rather than bitch about how similar the DJ's set is to the liveset they downloaded a few hours before).

As with anything, scarcity makes it that much more enjoyable -- we're just spoiled with abundance and an ever increasing amount of distractions ('hey look at me I'm in a booth and I got a bottle'/'omg look at me pose for my 500th facebook profile photo'). :)

The thing I miss most, as the OP pointed out, is the innocence. Yes everyone was out all night eating lucky charms, but there was an innocence about it that just made it magical.

You're right Swamper, it was the fact that we had to search it out that made it special. As for people bitching, it's a sad time when people start trying to draw attention to themselves with cynicism, and it works, as that leads to sapping the life out of what everyone enjoyed so much not too long ago.

Now let someone post that we're "stuck in the past", and you'll know who it is that carries the mentality that drained that magical time that we were all lucky to be a part of.

Great to see you Rob

The scence is all about bottles, tities and ass now. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Even the biggest candy kid from back in the days, now is one of the biggest international DJ that produces GINOBEATS! lol

the shirt *is* the pic... ;)

And yeah, the North American scene these days is largely much like it was in the late 80s - blithely self-indulgent, "LOOKITME, LOOKITME!!!", 19+ only with everything subsequently relegated to clubs, booze 'n blow, watered down fashion, music and mentalities.

Now Europe, on the other hand, took the rave scene and just ran with it:

Y'all can thank Sandra Pupatello (and others of her ilk), for the current scene in Ontario:

Still makes my blood boil to think about it.

Really...then please point me in the direction of the 3-4, 500-1000 person, multiple room warehouse parties with diverse lineups and open-minded crowds that are taking place in Toronto every weekend.
