If you think what is out there now is the same as what we had available to us, I genuinely feel bad for you that you didn't see what it had to offer us at the time.

I think the vibe/sentiment still must be out there, but it's relegated to the minority of people & events opposed to being an all-encompassing part of the culture like it once was.

Although I hear Montreal has done a better job maintaining it's scene, largely due to all the large annual events BEB, B&B, etc.

There is a marked culture of vanity that exists in the scene today that did not exist before. Although the bottle service trend is not completely to blame, I definitely see a connection to the general one-upping and dick-sizing that plagues the scene today.

Another contributing factor is the popularization of techno. Although I love the genre myself, techno fans have always had an elitist chip on their shoulders, and I think that this has been adopted by the masses.

Good to see you Graham.

I was part of the techno minority back in the day...can't believe that Toronto finally embraced it fully.

Or are you putting one over on me? :thepirate

As for the bottle service, it's a symptom like you said, but my main point is that instead of Toronto being itself it's like everyone wants to be Miami or Vegas now.

Although maybe the more culture gets shared/global in general, the lesser the local flavour.

Meh.
This topic is as dated as the scene we all used to know and love...
I did walk by 99 suds last night and feel a little nostalgic.

He's not talking about the same kind of Techno you're talking about.

Great to see you Rob

The scence is all about bottles, tities and ass now. It was bound to happen sooner or later. Even the biggest candy kid from back in the days, now is one of the biggest international DJ that produces GINOBEATS! lol

Great to see you too John.

It was ALWAYS about ass & titties though.

Hey, I know it is, as I've been away for awhile and likely missed the first 1000 times this topic got batted around.

Still, the sentiment is as valid as it is late. It's more like my personal mourning thread.

Hope you're doing great Sarah.

have you wankers done/allowed to happen to my beloved Toronto scene?

Bottle service, bad attempts @ high fashion, more popped collars than Jersey.

What happened to balls to the wall fun and all the characters?

Bring back 1999-2004 dammit.

Just when you thought the 'rave scene' had gone mainstream, it one upped you and went EVEN more mainstream.

Apparently, if you wear 300$ jeans, an affliction shirt, and have a glow stick in hand you're a raver.

Its ebb and flow... when things like bottle service, jersey shore'eque clubbing, and electro house become intrinsic to pop culture, you know its hit its peak. Just a quick listen to the radio will show you how commercial this has become.

I'd bet in the next few years 'the scene' will have whittled itself back to healthier, less pretentious levels, especially when the bell curve moves to the next big fad.

Then you'll be left with proper solid tunes, being spun in shady venues, no bottle service crowd, and people who are more into the tunes than the brands they wear. :tongue3

That being said, it does require a certain level of pretentiousness to say things were 'better' in the day.
