Man, I'd love to see how a track in that style is produced. I wonder how sample heavy it is and what they synthesize themselves and what sources they use etc.
Has anybody any helpful tips for this kind of music as it's not something that I fully understand. I usually produce with synthesized stuff and maybe percussion samples, but this seems mashed up with lots of stuff.

a lot of it is very sample oriented but don't get me wrong some of these guys are synth machines. a track probably everyone knows is this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acKvD-C70_U

however the arp line was takin from an awesome 80s record:

There are a lot of examples of this, i hear bass licks from 70s records all the time in other peoples records. One of my favorite guys that's new to ed banger is Breakbot but all his chord stabs, bass funks etc are samples. it's just really creative how he works them though.

Phonat's tracks are great, e.g :

kadomony
even though i like a lot of the artists mentioned here, i definitely wouldnt classify them as french house. more electro/indie or synthpop or dreamwave, etc as DJHali mentioned(fred falke and lifelike included. just cause they're french, doesn't mean that all of what they make is "french house")

crydamoure and le knight club is though :D

Swivel Hips - Casual Encounters

Erobique - Endorphinmachine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKNlZ7_1T08

and Set Me Free from Phonat kinda runs the line between french house and electro

i really wish genre names didn't exist... the nu-disco scene isn't big enough to have 6 sub genres which only classify like 3 artists. it's always the readers & bloggers that do these classifications, never the artists.

@kadomony just out of curiosity what would my side-project be classified as: www.myspace.com/greyghost80s

i'd say synthpop.

reminds me of some Tesla Boy stuff :D

btw, Dam Funk was talking about how he hates his stuff being classified as "chillwave" and some discussion on genre-splitting on his twitter haha

I agree with kadomony. Le Knight Club (with the other half of Daft Punk) made some of the best French House of the era.

Check out some of their stuff here:

Also, as for producing French House. You need 3 basic things.

A Sampler, A filter, and some rare disco records. That's pretty much the formula. And this is how the filtered loopy Chicago House sound influenced the French House scene.

Check out this example of French House anthems juxtaposed with their Disco sources. Pretty interesting.
