ponyo was quality work.

can anyone compete with Miyazaki?

he just keeps producing left and right.

uhm, my fav. Porco Rosso.Howl's.....ugh, hard to choose.

Makoto Shinkai also has talent, if he keeps it up, would love to see what he is capable of.

!! Saw this the other day at the store and wanted so bad to own it. $30 is a bit much to pay for a single movie though.

Porco Rosso is also excellent! I also have fond memories of watching Kiki's Delivery Service with my sister almost daily when we were young.

I barely consider Ghibli films 'anime' because their style is typically unique in itself; It's just excellent animation and generally consistent quality throughout, that's about it.

just watched Spirited Away again a couple days ago

I like Miyazaki but some of the other works of other Ghibli directors are much better IMO.

Whisper of the Heart is probably the best of them.

Looks like a fantasy anime, but its not. Its a really good drama about a girl struggling to write a book. The animation is beautiful, and is set in the town/city of Tama Hills in Tokyo, which is the same place as Pom Poko is set.

Pom Poko is cool too if you want to see giant testicaled tanuki that can morph into any living thing they want battle humans who are developing on their land. :p

Also Porco Rosso is very good too, that is a Miyazaki film. Its really amazing. Lots of good early 20th century airplane type stuff.

lol actually a lot of anime looks like a child fantasy story with sexy babes with dragonfly eyes..... but is actually a drama with profound moral background and is meant for mature audience (by "mature audience" i don't mean the legal definition regarding XXX content)

, some of it is just worth it for the wonderful artwork.

Watch anything that Makoto Shinkai has worked on with Comix Wave..

5 Centimeters Per Second and The Place Promised in Our Early Days (aka Beyond the Clouds) and you can't but help be amazed by the wonderful animation. Its insanely beautiful, almost hyper-realistic.

I really can't think of anything thats been animated this well in the last 10 years. It shines far above most of the really really really putrid crap thats come out of Japan since they moved to digital ink.

Watch below... especially around 4:25... epic combat :D

The stories are a bit drawn out and not as great as a miyazaki or ghibli work, but the art is just...
